EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Department of Athletics is pleased to announce that the College has received a Service Mark from the United States Patent and Trademark Office for its slogan, "Blue Collar Gold Standard."

Alumnus and former College Trustee, Rick Hughes, provided the legal assistance to E&H in obtaining the service mark which will apply across the Department of Athletics as a rallying point for student-athletes, coaches, alumni and fans. The phrase is the embodiment of Emory & Henry's long standing commitment to a strong work ethic, leading to exemplary outcomes in athletic competition.

"We are extremely grateful to Rick Hughes for the support that he has provided to make this happen," commented Director of Athletics Myra Sims. "As a native of Southwest Virginia, I fully understand and appreciate the "blue collar" mentality in this region. That hard-working mindset is one of the things which has made Emory & Henry what it is today. The phase "gold standard" ties our athletics goals back to the College's motto of 'Increase in Excellence.'"

With the service mark, Emory & Henry now holds the exclusive rights to the use of the phrase "Blue Collar Gold Standard" for use in the promotion of the College's intercollegiate sports. The service mark applies to advertising materials, clothing, and other merchandise.
