RIVER FALLS, Wis. – The Emory & Henry College Department of Athletics has partnered with Chi Alpha Sigma (XAΣ), the National College Athlete Honor Society, to recognize student-athletes who are leaders in the classroom, in their sport and in the community.

Emory & Henry joins five other institutions in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) - Bridgewater College, Hollins University, University of Lynchburg, Randolph College, and Virginia Wesleyan University - as members of the nationwide organization.

"This is a fantastic way for our student-athletes to be recognized for pursuing excellence in all aspects of their college experience," commented Christine Johnston, Head Men's & Women's Tennis Coach and Co-Advisor of E&H's Chi Alpha Sigma Chapter. "We hope that every student-athlete across all 24 of our sports strives to be inducted into this organization." Director of Sports Information & Game Day Operations, Joe Matthews, will also serve as co-advisor.

Chi Alpha Sigma was founded in 1996 by then-DePauw University head football coach, Nick Mourouzis. The organization provides the opportunity to become connected within a fraternal association that aligns their educational and athletic successes for a lifetime. Additionally, Chi Alpha Sigma has established a postgraduate scholarship in honor of Coach Mourouzis and now recognizes a pair of Scholar-Athletes of the Year from the membership.

The Department of Athletics, in coordination with the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, will use the following criteria for induction into the Xi Chapter of Chi Alpha Sigma:

•        Must have earned at least one letter in a varsity intercollegiate sport and be in good standing with their team;
•        must have achieved at least junior academic status after their fifth semester;
•        must have achieved a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.40;
•        must have endorsement from the head coach of their sport;
•        must be recommended by the college's chapter advisors;
•        must be of a good moral character.

Emory & Henry will hold its first induction ceremony during the spring 2020 semester. Visit Chi Alpha Sigma on the Internet for more information.
