EMORY, Va. – The Lynchburg College Baseball Team (8-7, 2-2 ODAC) picked up a pair of Old Dominion Athletic Conference wins Saturday afternoon as it defeated Emory & Henry College (6-8, 1-3 ODAC) at Porterfield/DeVault Field. The Hornets defeated the Wasps by scores of 4-2 and 11-2.
Game One – Lynchburg 4, Emory & Henry 2
E&H got out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as junior catcher Connor Wise (Cookeville, Tenn.) plated junior college teammate junior shortstop Jordan Woullard (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) on a single. Woullard doubled down the left field line to start off the inning.
Lynchburg answered in the second with a run as Joe Rogers hit a RBI triple down the right field line. The Hornets made it 4-0 in the fourth as Brock Schiflett hit a solo home run to right field and added two more on an error that left the Wasps' right fielder stunned after colliding with the fence.
The two teams would play five straight innings of scoreless baseball before E&H got a run back in the bottom of the ninth. Sophomore third baseman Bransen Christopher (Hickory, N.C.) doubled down the left field line to start things off. A single by freshman first baseman Chase Kirk (Knoxville, Tenn.) and a fielder's choice by freshman left fielder Andrew Stockstill (Roanoke, Va.) brought Christopher home.
Emory & Henry stranded seven runners in the game but held eight Lynchburg runners on base in the contest.
Lynchburg was led at the plate by Schiflett as he went two for four with two runs scored and a RBI while Rogers and Dan Savage each had a pair of hits. Martin Henderlite picked up the win to move to 3-1 on the year as he scattered five hits and one run over 6.1 innings of work with five strikeouts. Charlie Thieringer picked up the save in 2.2 innings of work with three setdowns.
Woullard, Christopher and Kirk each had two hits for the Wasps. Senior right-hander Jessup Lambert (Fries, Va.) went the distance as he allowed 11 hits and just two earned runs despite falling to 2-2 on the year.
Game Two – Lynchburg 11, Emory & Henry 2
The Hornets got a pair of runs in the top of the first as Schifflet hit his second homer of the day, this time a two-run shot.
Emory & Henry got a run back in the bottom of the inning when senior centerfielder Eric Houff (Blacksburg, Va.) hit a sacrifice fly to score Woullard who led off the frame with a double down the right field line.
Lynchburg exploded for eight runs in the fourth to put the game away early. The Hornets had five hits and took advantage of three walks and a hit batsman in the inning. The highlight of the frame was a grand slam by Dustin Arrowood that made the score 10-1.
E&H scored one in the bottom of the seventh as Kirk came home after a throwing error on a dropped third strike by the catcher.
In the top of the eighth, the Hornets made the final margin 11-1 when Rogers singled into right centerfield scoring Savage, who reached base two batters earlier when he was hit by a pitch.
Arrowood led the way for Lynchburg with four RBI while Michael Kenah and Lincoln Evans were each two-for-five on the day. Schiflett had two RBI and two runs scored as well. Brandon Miller went the distance in the win for the Hornets, scattering six hits over his nine innings of work with six strikeouts.
E&H struggled at the plate and left seven runners on base for a second-straight game. Freshman Matthew McInaw (Honey Brook, Pa.) fell to 2-1 with the loss as he lasted only 3.1 innings, giving up eight runs on seven hits with four walk and just two strikeouts.
Emory & Henry will host Milligan College on Tuesday afternoon at 3:00 p.m., at Porterfield/DeVault Field.
