Covenant Baseball Rallies To Defeat Emory & Henry, 3-1, On Opening Day Friday

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. – The Covenant College Baseball Team (1-0) picked up a 3-1 come-from-behind 3-1 win over Emory & Henry College (0-1) at the Covenant Baseball Field Friday afternoon. It was the first game of the 2015 season for both teams.

Emory & Henry got on the board in the top of the first. With two outs, senior first baseman Bransen Christopher (Hickory, N.C.) drew a walk to get things started. Senior designated hitter Kevin Nelson (Johnson City, Tenn.) singled to left field and junior right fielder Brandon Lineberry (Hillsville, Va.) was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Freshman third baseman Carson Bryant (Hickory, N.C.) singled into centerfield, plating Christopher for the 1-0 lead. The Wasps were unable to push another run across, leaving the bases loaded.

After Covenant left a pair of runners on base in the bottom of the first, the contest settled in and the defenses took control. The Scots tied the contest at one run apiece in the fifth. With two runners on and two outs, Scott Gillespie singled into left field, driving in K.C. Simons, who reached on a fielder's choice two batters earlier.

Covenant added the final two runs of the game in the seventh frame. With two outs and runners on the corners, Perry Rigby singled to right center, driving in Devin Cerrato, who reached base on an error to lead off the inning. Will Carlton had a RBI single in the stanza as well, making the score 3-1 in favor of the Scots.

Emory & Henry managed only two base runners in the final six and two-thirds innings of the game, putting together a pair of hits in the seventh.

Carlton went three-for-four with a RBI in the game while Gillespie had two hits, a RBI and a run scored. Garrett Kriston earned the win for Covenant scattering one run and five hits over eight innings of work with four strikeouts. Alec Mitchell earned the save, pitching a perfect ninth inning.

E&H was led offensively by Bryant's two-hit collegiate debut, as he added a RBI. Christopher went one-for-three with a run scored while Nelson and sophomore second baseman Hunter Jeffries (Hickory, N.C.) each tallied base hits.

Wasp junior right-hander Ty Hill (Knoxville, Tenn.) allowed one run on six hits in six innings of work for the no decision. Junior Matthew McInaw (Honey Brook, Pa.) suffered the loss, allowing two unearned runs in the seventh.

Emory & Henry will be back in action against Covenant on Saturday afternoon in a doubleheader. The pair of games, which are scheduled for seven innings, are set to begin at noon.
