Berry Baseball Defeats Emory & Henry, 5-3, Friday Afternoon

MOUNT BERRY, Ga. – The Berry College Baseball Team (4-0) picked up a 5-3 win over visiting Emory & Henry College (0-4) Friday afternoon at William R. Bowdoin Field.

The Vikings got on the board in the bottom of the first frame with a single through the left side by Hunter White which plated Dusty Tyson, who reached on an error to lead off the inning.

Emory & Henry equalized in the third inning on a single up the middle by senior shortstop Jordan Woullard (Oak Ridge, Tenn.), driving in junior centerfielder Brett Johnson (Sugar Grove, Va.). Johnson reached a batter earlier on a base hit through the right side and found himself on third thanks to a stolen base and passed ball.

Berry answered with two runs in the bottom of the third to go up 3-1 on a two-out two-run single through the left side by Devin Skelton.

The Wasps put up a pair of runs in the fifth to knot the score at three runs apiece. With the bases loaded, Johnson reached safely thanks to an error by the shortstop, driving in freshman catcher Chris Benton (Blountville, Tenn.). A RBI groundout by Woullard on the next at bat plated freshman second baseman Jacob Lykins (Hickory, N.C.), who had a bunt single earlier in the frame.

Berry took the lead for good with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Afred Francis hit a one-out sacrifice fly plated Sam Joyce and an error by the first baseman allowed Alex McGill to score from second base.

The Vikings were led offensively by White's 2-for-3 day with a RBI and a run scored while Ryan Smith went two-for-five with a run scored. Doug Heath picked up the win in relief for Berry, scattering three hits across four scoreless innings of work.

Johnson went 2-for-4 with a RBI and a run while sophomore left fielder Matthew Whisnant (Hickory, N.C.) also had a pair of base knocks. Sophomore left-hander Caelan Canady (Browns Summit, N.C.) took the loss, allowing two runs in 1.2 innings pitched.

Emory & Henry and Berry will be back on the diamond on Saturday at noon for a pair of seven-inning contests.
