Guilford Baseball Overwhelms Emory & Henry Tuesday Afternoon

EMORY, Va. – The Guilford College Baseball Team (5-12, 2-6 ODAC) put up eight runs in the first inning and never looked back as it earned a 23-3 win over Emory & Henry (2-11, 0-4 ODAC) Tuesday afternoon at Porterfield/DeVault Field in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action.

Highlighting the Quakers' eight-run first frame was a two-run home run to left field by Herc Ingles. Nick Blackwood also plated a pair of runs with a single earlier in the inning.

Emory & Henry answered by scoring a run in the bottom of the first. Senior first baseman Bransen Christopher (Hickory, N.C.) doubled to right centerfield with two outs and came home on the next at bat thanks to a fielding error by the third baseman.

Guilford extended the lead to 10-1 in the third and added four runs in the fourth to push the advantage to 14-1. Josh Shepherd hit a two-run single through the left since with two outs, highlighting the fourth inning.

The Wasps added a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh on back-to-back doubles by Christopher and junior right fielder Brandon Lineberry (Hillsville, Va.) to close the gap to 14-3.

Guilford got nine more runs in the top of the eighth to make the final score 23-3.

Ingles went four-for-seven with three runs and three RBI in the game. Shepherd went three-for-five with five RBI and three runs scored while Grayson Tuttle, Austin Wilson and Jacob Roberts each had a trio of hits in the contest. Darin Salter improved to 3-0 on the season as he allowed one run on four hits in five innings of work.

Christopher and Lineberry each had two hits and a RBI while Christopher scored a pair of runs. Junior right-hander Chase Kirk (Knoxville, Tenn.) suffered the loss for the Wasps.

Emory & Henry will be back in action on Wednesday when it hosts Maryville (Tenn.) College. First pitch between the Wasps and Scots is set for 3:00 p.m.
