Maryville Baseball Tops Emory & Henry, 10-3, Wednesday Afternoon

EMORY, Va. – The Maryville (Tenn.) College Baseball Team (15-7) scored five runs in the seventh inning to break a 2-2 tie as it went on to win by a 10-3 score over Emory & Henry College (2-12) Wednesday afternoon at Porterfield/DeVault Field.

The Scots got on the board in the top of the first when Nick Dean hit a two-run home run to centerfield. E&H cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the frame as senior first baseman Bransen Christopher (Hickory, N.C.) doubled to drive in freshman centerfielder Josh Macek (Concord, N.C.), who led off the frame with a double of his own.

After four and a half scoreless innings, the Wasps tied things up in the sixth. With sophomore second baseman Hunter Jeffries (Hickory, N.C.) on third base after a two-out triple, Macek hit an infield single to drive in the runner and make the score 2-2.

Maryville broke the game open with five runs in the seventh. A two-run double by John McDermott highlighted the inning as the Scots took a 7-2 advantage. MC added two more runs in the ninth to go up 10-2 with Jacob Frost's single up the middle accounting for two of the runs.

Emory & Henry loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the ninth. With one out, junior right fielder Brandon Lineberry (Hillsville, Va.) drew a walk to score Macek. The Wasps were unable to put another run across as the game concluded with the 10-3 final margin.

Frost led the way for the Scots with a three-for-four outing with three RBI. Logan Jenkins had a pair of base hits and two runs while Sam Jokerst and Zack Blonder had two hits each. Alex Torres earned the win for Maryville, allowing one run on three hits in three innings of relief.

Emory & Henry's offense was paced by Macek's three-for-four day with two runs and a RBI. Christopher also had three hits on the day while Jeffries and sophomore right fielder Matthew Whisnant (Connelly Springs, N.C.) tallied two hits apiece. Junior right-hander Matthew McInaw (Honey Brook, Pa.) suffered the loss, allowing five runs on six hits in three innings pitched.

E&H will return on Old Dominion Athletic Conference action on Saturday when it travels to Bridgewater College for a doubleheader. Game one is scheduled to start at noon.
