Maryville Baseball Defeats Emory & Henry, 10-5, Tuesday Afternoon

MARYVILLE, Tenn. – The Maryville (Tenn.) College Baseball Team (19-7) picked up a 10-5 win over visiting Emory & Henry College (3-16) Tuesday afternoon at Scotland Yard. The Scots take the season series over the Wasps, 2-0.

Emory & Henry got on the board with two runs in the top of the first. A sacrifice fly by senior first baseman Bransen Christopher (Hickory, N.C.) and a single to right field by junior right fielder Brandon Lineberry (Hillsville, Va.) were good enough to put the Wasps on top.

Maryville answered with three runs in their first opportunity at the plate. A two-run double by Austin Watters highlighted the inning as the Scots went up 3-2.

E&H tied the game at three runs apiece in the third when senior shortstop Jordan Woullard (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) drove in junior left fielder Ben Barnett (Knoxville, Tenn.) from third base with a groundout. Barnett led off the inning with a double down the right field line.

MC went up 5-3 with two runs in the bottom half of the third. Watters got another RBI, this time on a single to right field. The two teams traded runs in the sixth stanza for a 6-4 Maryville lead. Freshman designated hitter Austin Kiser (Rosedale, Va.) had a RBI double for the Wasps.

The Scots added four insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth, with Watters coming through again with a two-run single to complete a three-hit, five-RBI afternoon.

Emory & Henry got one run back in the top of the ninth for the final 10-5 margin.

Watters was one of three Scots to have multi-hit games as Zack Blonder also went three-for-four. Nick Dean had two hits and scored four runs while Logan Jenkins scored a pair of his own. Evan Heffner picked up the win in relief, while Tyler Hopkins got his seventh save of the year.

Kiser had a team-high two hits for Emory & Henry while Chirstopher and Barnett each had a hit a run and a RBI. Freshman Dakota Grizzel (Castlewood, Va.) went five innings on the mound, allowing four earned runs on seven hits.

Emory & Henry will return home on Wednesday for a 3:00 p.m., Old Dominion Athletic Conference single game against Roanoke College.
