Roanoke Baseball Tops Emory & Henry, 11-3, Wednesday Afternoon In ODAC Action

EMORY, Va. – The Roanoke College Baseball Team (7-6, 3-3 ODAC) hammered out 16 hits in an 11-3 win over Emory & Henry College (3-17, 1-8 ODAC) Wednesday afternoon at Porterfield/DeVault Field in Old Dominion Athletic Conference play.

The Maroons took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first and added three runs in the third for a 4-0 advantage. A two-out single by Clark Crutchfield drove in a pair of runs for Roanoke in the third frame.

Emory & Henry responded with two runs in the bottom of the third. A sacrifice bunt by senior shortstop Jordan Woullard (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) plated sophomore left fielder Matthew Whisnant (Connelly Springs, N.C.) and a single to left center by junior right fielder Brandon Lineberry (Hillsville, Va.) drove in the other run for the 4-2 score.

The two teams traded runs in the seventh to make the margin 5-3. The Wasps got their run on a sacrifice fly by senior first baseman Bransen Christopher (Hickory, N.C.).

Roanoke broke the game open with five runs in the eighth for a 10-3 advantage. Brian Kluge highlighted the frame with a single up the middle to drive in a run. The Maroons added a final run in the top of the ninth for the final 11-3 margin.

Emory & Henry was able to load the bases in the ninth but could not push a run across in its final time at bat.

Roanoke's Kluge went four-for-six with three runs while Will Black was three-for-five with three runs and two RBI. Devin Cassity had three hits as well. Cameron Holshouser picked up the win, scattering three runs and eight hits over 6.1 innings pitched with seven strikeouts.

Freshman centerfielder Josh Macek (Concord, N.C.) had two hits and scored two runs for the Wasps while Woullard, Christopher and Lineberry each added a hit and a RBI. Junior right-hander Matthew McInaw (Honey Brook, Pa.) suffered the loss, allowing four runs in four innings pitched.

Emory & Henry will take to the road for its next six contests. The Wasps will travel to Virginia Wesleyan College on Saturday for an ODAC doubleheader. First pitch is set for noon.
