Hampden-Sydney Baseball Defeats Emory & Henry In ODAC Doubleheader Sunday

HAMPDEN SYDNEY, Va. – The Hampden-Sydney College Baseball Team (8-15-1, 5-6 ODAC) picked up a pair of Old Dominion Athletic Conference wins over visiting Emory & Henry College (3-21, 1-12 ODAC) Sunday afternoon at Ty Cobb Ballpark. The Tigers took game one by a 10-2 score and completed the sweep with an 11-4 win in game two.

Game One – Hampden-Sydney 10, Emory & Henry 2
The Tigers got on the board with one run in the bottom of the first and added four runs in the third to lead 5-0. Jack Elliott had a two-run single with one out in the third to get things going.

Emory & Henry's defense held strong for four innings in the game but allowed five runs in the eighth as Hampden-Sydney went up 10-0. The Tigers took advantage of four hits in the frame highlighted by a two-run single by Spencer Wiles.

The Wasps spoiled the shutout in the top of the ninth when senior designated hitter Kevin Nelson (Johnson City, Tenn.) hit a two-run home run, driving in junior right fielder Brandon Lineberry (Hillsville, Va.), who started things off with a one-out single.

Wiles had two hits and three RBI for the Tigers while Wiles scored three times with a hit and a RBI. Matt Hinson earned the complete-game win, scattering seven hits over nine innings of work with two strikeouts.

Nelson had two hits, two RBI and a run while freshman centerfielder Josh Macek (Concord, N.C.) added a pair of hits. Sophomore Garrett Butler (Knoxville, Tenn.) took the loss, allowing six earned runs despite five strikeouts in 7.2 innings pitched.

Game Two – Hampden-Sydney 11, Emory & Henry 4
HSC started things off with a run in the bottom of the second. Emory & Henry tied the game at one when sophomore second baseman Hunter Jeffries (Hickory, N.C.) drove in freshman third baseman Jacob Lykins (Hickory, N.C.).

In the bottom of the fourth Hampden-Sydney took a 2-1 lead on a single by Jackson Rogers. The Tigers extended their lead to 6-1 after five thanks in part to a two-run single by Elliott which highlighted a four-run inning. HSC added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to lead 8-1.

Emory & Henry got two runs back in the eighth on a bases-loaded single by freshman catcher Chris Benton (Blountville, Tenn.), plating Nelson and Christopher to make the score 8-3.

Hampden-Sydney added three more runs in the bottom of the eighth and a double by Christopher in the ninth made the final score 11-4.

Rogers had four hits and two RBI to lead the Tigers while Jeff Gray notched three hits and three runs. Christian Hamlett was two-for-four with a run and four RBI as well. Teddy West earned the win, scattering one run and seven hits over seven innings pitched.

Christopher was three-for-five with a run and a RBI while Jeffries and Lykins notched two hits each. Sophomore Matthew Whisnant (Connelly Springs, N.C.) took the loss, allowing six runs on 10 hits in five innings of work despite four strikeouts.

Emory & Henry will travel to Salem, Virginia on Tuesday evening for a single ODAC game against Roanoke College. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
