Emory & Henry Baseball Stings Greensboro, 16-13, Wednesday On The Road

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Emory & Henry College Baseball Team (4-22) snapped an eight-game losing streak with a 16-13 victory over Greensboro College (10-16) Wednesday afternoon at Ted Leonard Park. The Wasps pounded out a season-high 21 hits in the victory.

E&H got out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a single to left field by junior right fielder Brandon Lineberry (Hillsville, Va.). The Pride tied the contest at one run apiece in the bottom of the second by the Wasps went back ahead, 2-1, in the third when freshman catcher Chris Benton (Blountville, Tenn.) doubled to left field.

In the top of the fourth, Emory & Henry added four runs to take a 6-1 advantage. Lineberry hit a two-run shot left field to highlight the frame while senior first baseman Bransen Christopher (Hickory, N.C.) and sophomore second baseman Hunter Jeffries (Hickory, N.C.)  each had run-scoring base hits.

Greensboro closed the gap to 6-5 with one run in the fourth and three more in the fifth. The Pride put together five hits and took advantage of two Wasp runs to score four times.

Emory & Henry tacked on two runs in the sixth and six runs in the top of the seventh to go up 14-5. Christopher had a one-out, two-run single while Lineberry and junior designated hitter Chase Kirk (Knoxville, Tenn.) each notched RBI base hits in the seventh.

The Pride answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning to close the margin to 14-9 but the Wasps put up two more runs in the eighth to lead 16-9.

Greensboro put up four runs in the  bottom of the eighth, highlighted by a two-run double by Zach Neumeister to make the final score 16-13.

Lineberry went five-for-six with six RBI and three runs scored. Freshman second baseman Jacob Lykins (Hickory, N.C.) had four hits and scored two runs while Christopher had three runs, three hits and three RBI. Junior right-hander Matthew McInaw (Honey Brook, Pa.) went 6.1 innings to earn the win, striking out five.

Andrew Ray had four hits, three runs and two RBI for Greensboro while Andrew Toney added three hits scored two runs. Neumeister finished the day with three hits, four RBI and a run. Mitch Choros took the loss on the mound for the Pride, allowing six runs on eight hits with in four innings of work.

Emory & Henry will return home on Saturday for an Old Dominion Athletic Conference doubleheader with Washington and Lee University. First pitch is set for noon.
