Covenant Baseball Defeats Emory & Henry, 5-0, To Complete Series Sweep Saturday Afternoon

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. – The Covenant College Baseball Team (5-0) scored for runs in the first inning en route to a 5-0 victory over Emory & Henry College (0-6) Saturday afternoon in non-conference action.

The Scots started out with four runs in the bottom half of the first inning thanks to three hits and two walks. Caleb Boyle got the scoring started with a double to centerfield and three batters later, Perry Rigby doubled down the right field line to drive in two more.  Covenant pushed another run across on the next at bat.

After six and a half scoreless innings, CC added a final insurance run in the bottom of the eighth to make the score 5-0. Joel Johnson hit a one-out solo home run to left field, capping the scoring.

Luke Harvey went two-for-three with a run while Johnson scored twice with a hit and a walk. Jonah Paul picked up the complete-game shutout, scattering three hits and nine strikeouts.

Emory & Henry got two of its hits from senior right fielder Brandon Lineberry (Hillsville, Va.) while freshman third baseman Eli Straw (Radford, Va.) had the other base knock. Freshman Troy Polen (Lexington, N.C.) suffered the loss allowing four runs. Freshman Gavin Felty (Bristol, Va.) pitched six innings of three-hit ball in relief, striking out five.

E&H will travel to Greensboro College on Wednesday for its first mid-week contest of the season. The Wasps and Pride are scheduled for a 2:00 p.m., first pitch.
