Emory & Henry Baseball Splits Its Doubleheader With Mt. Aloysius In Saturday’s Home Opener

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Baseball Team (2-9) claimed a doubleheader split against visiting Mt. Aloysius College (1-1) Saturday afternoon at Porterfield/DeVault Field. The seven-inning twin-billing marked the first home contests for the Wasps this season as they won game one, 4-1, before dropping the nightcap 5-4.

Game One – Emory & Henry 4, Mt. Aloysius 1
The Mounties got on the board in the top of the first inning on a single to left field by Connor Bowie. E&H answered in the bottom of the frame as senior right fielder Brandon Lineberry (Hillsville, Va.) drove in sophomore centerfielder Josh Macek (Concord, N.C.) with a sacrifice fly.

After two and a half scoreless innings, the Wasps took a 2-1 lead in the fourth on a single to left centerfield by freshman catcher Connor Stevenson (Stephens City, Va.). Emory & Henry made it 3-1 in the fifth as sophomore first baseman Carson Bryant (Hickory, N.C.) plated Macek with a sacrifice fly of his own. Emory & Henry added an insurance run in the sixth to make the final margin 4-1.

Stevenson had a pair of hits and a RBI while Macek scored twice on a hit and two walks. Bryant had a hit, a run and a RBI in the game. Senior left-hander Aaron Sparks (Troutman, N.C.) went the distance for his first win of the year. He scattered six hits and three strikeouts over seven innings of work.

MAC's Benjamin Legath had two hits while Bowie added a hit and a RBI. Ian Helsel had a hit, a walk and a run. Legath suffered the loss, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks in four innings of work.

Game Two – Mt. Aloysius 5, Emory & Henry 4
After the first three innings went scoreless, the Mounties scored three in the top of the fourth thanks to two hits and an error. Mt. Aloysius first got on the board thanks to a bunt single by Matthew McCourt on a squeeze play.

The Wasps answered in the bottom of the fourth, tying things up at three. E&H pounded out four hits in the inning alone with freshman catcher Corbin Hockensmith (Huntersville, N.C.) and freshman left fielder Ben Sexton (Lebanon, Va.) posting RBI base knocks.

Emory & Henry took a 4-3 lead in the fifth on a single by freshman first baseman Luke Shepherd (Knoxville, Tenn.), driving in Lineberry for the advantage.

In the top of the seventh, Legath roped a one-out double down the right field line to clear the bases and give the Mounties a 5-4 lead. The Wasps got a runner aboard with two outs in the bottom of the inning, but was unable to score.

McCourt, Helsel and Chase Miller each had a pair of hits in the game but it was Legath's two-run double which was the highlight. Brady Wright earned the win in relief, allowing just one hit while striking out three in 2.1 scoreless innings.

Bryant and Sexton had two hits each in game two as Sexton added a RBI. Hockensmith had a hit, run and RBI as well. Junior Garrett Butler (Knoxville, Tenn.) went six innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits with five strikeouts for the no-decision. Junior Nick Lesnak (Blountville, Tenn.) suffered the loss.

Emory & Henry and Mt. Aloysius will square off in a nine-inning affair on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
