EMORY, Va. – The Maryville College Baseball Team (11-3) scored seven runs between the fifth and seventh innings as it picked up a 10-6 win over Emory & Henry College (3-10) Tuesday afternoon at Porterfield/DeVault Field. The Scots received votes in the Collegiate Baseball NCAA Division III preseason poll.

Maryville got on the board with two runs in the second and extended their lead to 3-0 with a score in the third.

The Wasps responded with four runs in the bottom of the fourth with a quartet of runs to go up 4-3. Freshman third baseman Eli Straw (Radford, Va.) had a two-run double to left centerfield to highlight the frame.

MC got four runs in the fifth thanks in part to back-to-back home runs by Zack Blonder and Chris Ervin. E&H responded with a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth by Straw to make the score 7-5.

Maryville added three runs over the sixth and seventh inning to push the advantage to 10-5. A sacrifice fly in the eighth by senior right fielder Brandon Lineberry (Hillsville, Va.) drove in freshman second baseman Daulton Horne (Bristol, Va.) from second base to make the final score 10-6.

Blonder and Clifton Dempsey each finished the game with three hits while Blonder added three RBI and scored a pair of runs. Johnny Carpenter had two hits and two runs while Brendan Lawler drove in two on his two hits. Sean Helton picked up the win in relief, pitching two shutout innings with a pair of strikeouts.

The Wasps were led offensively by Straw's two hits, two runs and two RBI while Horne had two hits and two runs. Junior designated hitter Hunter Jeffries (Hickory, N.C.) and freshman catcher Connor Stevenson (Stephens City, Va.) each added two hits in the game. Junior Nick Lesnak (Blountville, Tenn.) suffered the loss, allowing six runs on seven hits through the middle three innings of the contest.

Emory & Henry will open ODAC play on Saturday with a home doubleheader against Hampden-Sydney College. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
