Bridgewater Baseball Sweeps Emory & Henry Friday In ODAC Action

EMORY, Va. – The Bridgewater College Baseball Team (15-9, 6-3 ODAC) earned a pair of wins in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action over Emory & Henry College (6-19, 2-7 ODAC) Friday afternoon at Porterfield/DeVault Field. The Eagles claimed the victories by scores of 17-9 and 8-4.

Game One – Bridgewater 17, Emory & Henry 9
BC got out to a 5-1 lead after four innings and hung six more on the board in the top of the fifth. A two-run double by Austin Batten highlighted the fifth frame for the Eagles. Emory & Henry put four runs across in the bottom half of the fifth to close the gap to 11-5. Senior right fielder Brandon Lineberry (Hillsville, Va.) plated a pair with a single up the middle.

In the top of the seventh, Bridgewater got five more runs to go up 16-5 thanks to seven hits and an error. Lineberry hit a solo home run to centerfield for E&H in the bottom of the seventh, making the score 16-6.

A run for the Eagles in the top of the eighth extended the advantage to 17-6, but the Wasps got three more runs over the final two innings to make the final score 17-9.

Cavin Clyde and Kenner Berry had four hits each while Clyde scored three times and berry scored four runs and drove in a pair. Justin Petock picked up the win, scattering five runs and seven hits over six innings of work.

Lineberry went four-for-four with three runs and three RBI while freshman left fielder Ben Sexton (Lebanon, Va.) had three hits, three runs and two RBI. Senior left-hander Aaron Sparks (Troutman, N.C.) suffered the loss, allowing 11 runs on 11 hits in 4.1 innings pitched.

Game Two – Bridgewater 8, Emory & Henry 4
The Eagles scored two runs in the top of the first and extended their lead to 5-0 midway through the third. Berry had a two-run home run in each inning.

Emory & Henry got on the board with four runs in the bottom of the third. Sophomore centerfielder Josh Macek (Concord, N.C.) started the Wasps off with a single up the middle while Lineberry tagged a three-run shot over the left centerfield fence two batters later to make the score 5-4.

Bridgewater scored a run in the fourth and added two insurance runs in the sixth for the final 8-4 score. Batten capped the scoring with a single up the middle.

Berry had two runs on two hits and four RBI while Dylan Horne and Chris King added two runs on two hits. Tristan Daywalt got the win, going 6.2 innings allowing four runs on 10 hits while striking out four.

Lineberry added three more hits, and another three RBI in the nightcap while sophomore designated hitter Carson Bryant (Hickory, N.C.) tacked on three hits. Junior Garrett Butler (Knoxville, Tenn.) allowed four earned runs over seven innings on nine hits as errors by the Wasps' defense proved costly again.

Emory & Henry will travel to face Roanoke College on Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m., in an ODAC matchup.
