Emory & Henry Baseball Defeats Guilford, 5-3, Tuesday Afternoon At Home

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Baseball Team (8-22, 4-9 ODAC) scored five unanswered runs in defeating Guilford College (14-16, 4-10 ODAC) by a 5-3 score Tuesday in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action at Porterfield/DeVault Field.

Guilford got the scoring started with a three-run homer by Joe Metts in the top of the third.

The Wasps got on the board in the fourth on senior right fielder Brandon Lineberry (Hillsville, Va.) drilled a solo homer to left centerfield. It was Lineberry's team-leading seventh round-tripper of the year.

Emory & Henry tied the game at three in the sixth when sophomore shortstop Holden Watkins (Ridgeway, Va.) hit a two-out double to left-center, plating a pair.

In the seventh, E&H took a 4-3 advantage on a perfectly placed squeeze bunt by junior designated hitter Hunter Jeffries (Hickory, N.C.). The play brought home freshman left fielder Ben Sexton (Lebanon, Va.), who got aboard with a one-out double.

Emory & Henry added an insurance run in the eighth for the final 5-3 margin. Freshman third baseman Eli Straw (Radford, Va.) got a base hit to left field and thanks to an error, sophomore first baseman Carson Bryant (Hickory, N.C.) came around to score from first base.

A three-up, three-down inning in the top of the ninth gave freshman Gavin Felty (Bristol, Va.) his second win in seven days and his first complete game of his career. Felty was masterful on the mound, allowing three runs on six hits while striking out seven.

Bryant and Watkins each had two hits for the Wasps as Bryant scored twice and Watkins drove in a pair. Lineberry and Jeffries each had a hit, a run and a RBI.

Guilford's offense was powered by Metts' home run and he finished the game with two hits, a run and three RBI. Chuck Noble added two hits of his own. Darin Salter took the loss, allowing four runs on eight hits with four strikeouts in 6.2 innings of work.

Emory & Henry will hit the road for an Old Dominion Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. The Wasps will visit the Hornets of Shenandoah University, with first pitch scheduled for noon.
