WINCHESTER, Va. – The No. 10 Shenandoah University Baseball Team (23-6, 10-4 ODAC) moved into the top spot in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference regular season standings with a doubleheader sweep of visiting Emory & Henry College (8-24, 4-11 ODAC) Sunday afternoon at Bridgeforth Field. The Hornets, who are ranked No. 10 in NCAA Division III by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper, won by scores of 8-2 and 9-2.
Game One – No. 10 Shenandoah 8, Emory & Henry 2
SU started the game off with a 2-0 lead after the first. A one-out single through the left side by Nate Loman provided the scoring.
Emory & Henry answered with single runs in the second and third to tie things up at two runs each. The Wasps got the bases loaded in the second and sophomore centerfielder Josh Macek (Concord, N.C.) singled to right field to drive in a run but could not score again. E&H got its second run in the top of the third when freshman third baseman Eli Straw (Radford, Va.) hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield.
In the fifth, Shenandoah took the lead after two hits and two errors and added to its tally with a two-run home run by Tyler Hott in the sixth, making the score 5-2. Three runs in the eighth provided the extra insurance to make the final score 8-2. Zach Herbaugh had a two-run base hit in the eighth.
Joe Coleman went three-for-five with a run scored while Hott had two runs on two hits and two RBI and Ryan Glendon added a pair of base knocks. Steve Jones earned the win, pitching six scoreless innings in relief, allowing three hits and striking out two.
E&H was led by Macek with two hits and a RBI while Straw added a hit and a RBI of his own. Senior left-hander Aaron Sparks (Troutman, N.C.) allowed five earned runs on 11 hits with five strikeouts in 7.1 innings.
Game Two – No. 10 Shenandoah 9, Emory & Henry 2
The Hornets scored two unearned runs in the first and scored five times in the second to push their advantage to 7-0. Jake Loew hit a two-run shot to centerfield to highlight the second. In the third, Shenandoah added two more scores to go up 9-0.
Emory & Henry got on the board in the fifth frame with two runs. Senior left fielder Ben Barnett (Knoxville, Tenn.) hit a two-run single up the middle with the bases loaded to provide the Wasps' scoring for the game. The last five innings went scoreless as Shenandoah took the 9-2 decision.
Abel Arocho scored twice on two hits while Hott had two hits and a run. Lowe and Tristan Baker each had two RBI and a run on one hit. Michael Scimanico scattered two runs on six hits with six strikeouts over seven innings of work to pick up the victory.
Wasp junior Garrett Butler (Knoxville, Tenn.) allowed nine runs on nine hits with three strikeouts in five innings pitched while freshman Logan Forster (Christiansburg, Va.) pitched three scoreless innings in relief with two hits and two strikeouts.
Emory & Henry is scheduled to step out of ODAC play when it hosts a pair of seven-inning games against Greensboro College on Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 p.m.
