Roanoke Baseball Slips Past Emory & Henry, 3-1, Tuesday Afternoon In ODAC Action

EMORY, Va. – The Roanoke College Baseball Team (21-15, 9-9 ODAC) scored a pair of runs in the top of the ninth inning to escape with a 3-1 victory over Emory & Henry College (9-28, 4-14 ODAC) Tuesday afternoon at Porterfield/DeVault Field. The Maroons and Wasps split their Old Dominion Athletic Conference series with each team winning on the road.

Roanoke got on the board in the top of the third when Will Black scored on a wild pitch. Black started off the inning with a one-out base hit to left field.

In the bottom of the fifth, E&H answered to tie the game, 1-1. With freshman catcher Connor Stevenson (Stephens City, Va.) on second base after a single and a sacrifice bunt, freshman centerfielder Ben Sexton (Lebanon, Va.) hit a screaming ground-rule double to right field to plate the run.

The Maroons got the go-ahead runs in the top of the ninth. With one out and a runner on third base, Will Decker tagged a home run to right field to make the score 3-1.

The Wasps got a runner aboard with one out in the bottom of the ninth, but a line-drive double play ended the game.

Decker went two-for-four with a run and two RBI while Craig Kiley also had a pair of hits. Harrison Richards picked up the complete-game victory scattering a run and six hits, striking out seven on the day.

Emory & Henry sophomore shortstop Holden Watkins (Ridgeway, Va.) and Sexton had two hits each in the game with Sexton driving in the Wasps' lone run. Freshman Gavin Felty (Bristol, Va.) allowed one run on four hits in eight innings pitched with five strikeouts while freshman Logan Forster (Christiansburg, Va.) suffered the loss in relief.

E&H will be back in action on Wednesday afternoon when it hosts Ferrum College in the final non-conference game of the season. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
