Washington and Lee Baseball Sweeps Emory & Henry In Season Finale Saturday

EMORY/ABINGDON, Va. – The Washington and Lee University Baseball Team (25-12, 16-4 ODAC) capped the Old Dominion Athletic Conference regular season with a pair of victories over Emory & Henry College (17-23, 7-13 ODAC) Saturday afternoon.  The Generals picked up the wins by scores of 8-6 and 18-7.

The doubleheader took over 10 hours to complete with a three-hour lightning/rain delay, forcing the second game to be moved to Abingdon High School to finish under the lights.

Emory & Henry honored its four seniors: Ryan Mullins (Wise, Va.), Garrett Butler (Knoxville, Tenn.), Hunter Jeffries (Hickory, N.C.) and Nick Lesnak (Blountville, Tenn.) prior to the start of game one in the team's annual Senior Day ceremony.

Game One
- The two squads traded runs early before W&L took a 4-1 lead in the fifth. Ryan Monson and Cory Paton each had solo home runs during the stretch.
- Emory & Henry scored five straight and went up 6-4 after seven, highlighted by a two-run single up the middle by junior left fielder Zach Smith (Powder Springs, Ga.).
- In the top of the ninth, the Generals scored twice to tie the game at six and force extra innings. The go-ahead run in the top of the 10th on a two-run homer to right centerfield by Kyle Ruedisili for the 8-6 victory.
- Danny Devereux pitched the final 3.2 innings in shutout form, allowing just four hits with three strikeouts.
- Wasp freshman Alex Laws (Hudson, N.C.) suffered the loss, allowing two runs on two hits in one inning pitched.

Game Two
- Washington and Lee jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the top of the first. In the second, a weather system materialized over Washington County and caused the game to be delayed by over three hours.
- The teams resumed play at Abingdon High School's Falcon Field at 7:28 p.m.
- The Generals extended their lead to 16-2 after four innings en route to the win.
- E&H scored three runs in the sixth and two in the bottom of the eighth for the final 18-7 margin. The Wasps' runs in the eighth came on a two-run homer by sophomore catcher Connor Stevenson (Stephens City, Va.).
- Kevin McHugh earned the win in relief, pitching three innings for the Generals. Wasp sophomore Gavin Felty (Bristol, Va.) suffered the loss.
