Virginia Wesleyan Baseball Takes Two From Emory & Henry Saturday Afternoon

EMORY, Va. – The Virginia Wesleyan University Baseball Team (24-10, 14-3 ODAC) maintained its perch near the top of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference standings Saturday afternoon after picking up a doubleheader sweep over Emory & Henry College (11-18, 4-13 ODAC). The Marlins won game one, 8-0, and completed the day with a 14-6 victory.

Saturday was also Senior Day for Emory & Henry, as the team honored their 11 seniors prior to the start of game one.

Game One
- VWU broke open a scoreless game in the top of the third inning with three runs capped by Deon Hammond's single through the right side.
- Zack Burkhart singled to right centerfield in the fourth to press the lead to 4-0.
- The Marlins added two insurance runs in the fifth thanks to a double by Hammond and a single by Brady Fallon.
- Virginia Wesleyan scored single runs in the eighth and ninth for the 8-0 final score.
- Jacob Pilarski went the distance to earn the complete-game shutout, allowing just four hits while striking out nine.
- E&H senior Gavin Felty (Bristol, Va.) suffered the loss, allowing three earned runs on eight hits in five innings of work despite striking out seven.

Game Two
- The Marlins got things started with a run in the top of the first but the Wasps answered with four in the bottom of the frame. Junior right fielder Ben Sexton (Lebanon, Va.) hit into a fielder's choice to score senior second baseman Daulton Horne (Bristol, Va.) to start things off before senior first baseman Daniel Huff (Rougemont, N.C.) cleared the bases with a three-run double.
- Jonathan Rivera hit a two-run shot to left field in the second to draw the score to 4-3 but E&H got a run back in the bottom of the frame.
- After scoring once in the top of the fourth to make the score 5-4, Virginia Wesleyan took a 6-5 lead in the fifth on a two-run homer to left by Zack Clark.
- E&H knotted the game at six in the bottom half of the fifth on a single by Huff.
- Virginia Wesleyan cranked out eight runs in the sixth to make the score 14-6. Clark and Pilarski both had two-run doubles in the frame while Dylan Gentry also drove in a pair with a single up the middle.
- Andrew Lowe earned the win in relief, going three innings and allowing just one runs on four hits with two strikeouts.
- Wasp junior Kyle Creasey (South Chesterfield, Va.) suffered the loss, allowing eight runs on seven hits in 2.1 innings of work.

- Emory & Henry will remain at home on Tuesday when it hosts Guilford College at 3:00 p.m.
