Hampden-Sydney Baseball Tops Emory & Henry In ODAC Doubleheader Saturday Afternoon

HAMPDEN SYDNEY, Va. – The Hampden-Sydney College Baseball Team (13-12-1, 7-6 ODAC) picked up a pair of victories over Emory & Henry College (3-24, 0-13 ODAC) Saturday afternoon in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action. The Tigers took game one by a 7-3 score and rallied for a 13-11 victory in the nightcap.

Game One
Hampden-Sydney opened up a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first highlighted by a two-run single by Blake Hartman. The Wasps drew the score to 5-3 in the third on a two-run triple by sophomore first baseman Joe Tolone (Concord, N.C.) and a single to right field by junior designated hitter Chandler Kezele (Marshall, Va.). In the seventh, the Tigers added a pair of insurance runs for the final 7-3 score.

Chase Mayberry picked up the complete-game victory, scattering three runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts. Sophomore J.T. Agosto (Cornelius, N.C.) permitted six runs on nine hits in six innings of work with three strikeouts.

Game Two
The Wasps exploded for four runs in the top of the first, highlighted by a two-run double down the left field line by junior designated hitter Corbin Hockensmith (Huntersville, N.C.). In the bottom of the frame, HSC answered with four runs of its own to tie the contest.

Emory & Henry bounced back with a five-spot in the top of the second as Tolone belted his second two-run triple of the day. Hockensmith and senior right fielder Ben Sexton (Lebanon, Va.) both snagged their second RBI-base hits in as many innings as the Wasps went up 9-4.

Between the fourth and the eighth, Hampden-Sydney outscored E&H, 8-1, to go up 13-10. Sexton capped the scoring for the night (13-11) in the top of the ninth with a single to left centerfield.

Cameron Myers earned the win in relief for the Tigers, pitching the final 3.2 innings with one run on one hit and three strikeouts. Wasp junior Alex Laws (Hudson, N.C.) suffered the loss.
