Emory & Henry Baseball Splits Its Senior Day Doubleheader With Washington and Lee Sunday

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Baseball Team (5-29, 2-17 ODAC) split its Old Dominion Athletic Conference doubleheader with Washington and Lee University (14-17, 8-11 ODAC) Sunday afternoon. The Generals rallied for a 12-11 win in game one while the Wasps salvaged the split with a 5-4 win in the nightcap.

The twin-billing also served as Senior Day for the Wasps, who honored their 11 seniors prior to the start of game one.

Game One
The Wasps got out to a 1-0 lead after the first on a single through the left side by sophomore first baseman Joe Tolone (Concord, N.C.).  After W&L took a 3-1 lead in the top of the third, E&H responded with three runs of its own to retake the lead, 4-3.

Emory & Henry scored three runs in the fifth highlighted by a two-run homer by Tolone to go up 7-4 but the Generals uncorked for five runs in the sixth to lead, 9-7. Matt Whitely and Jackson Gazin each had a two-run double in the frame.

Four runs between the sixth and eighth frames gave the Wasps an 11-9 advantage but W&L scored three in the ninth to go up 12-11. E&H put a pair of runners in scoring position in the bottom of the ninth but was unable to push one across.

Danny Devereux earned the win in relief for the Generals, allowing one earned run on five hits in 2.2 innings of work. Wasp sophomore Jordan Smith (Bassett, Va.) suffered the loss, allowing one unearned run on two hits and a walk.

Game Two
Emory & Henry broke open a scoreless game in the bottom of the fourth as sophomore right fielder Hayden Milley (Clover, S.C.) scored on a ball four wild pitch. The Generals scored twice in the fifth and once in the seventh to take a 3-1 lead.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Wasps answered with four runs highlighted by a two-run double to right-centerfield by senior centerfielder Ben Sexton (Lebanon, Va.). Junior Chandler Kezele (Marshall, Va.) also had a RBI double in the frame.

W&L pushed one across on a single through the right side by Chad Feeley in the eighth to make it 5-4 but would get no closer as the E&H defense slammed the door.

Junior Toby Robson (Blythewood, S.C.) picked up the victory, scattering three runs on nine hits with seven strikeouts over seven innings of work. Sophomore Zach Houston (Waxhaw, N.C.) picked up the save, facing three batters in the ninth. W&L's Jackson Thigpen was settled with the loss, allowing five runs on 10 hits in 6.2 innings.

Emory & Henry will play its final home game of the season on Tuesday when it hosts Guilford in ODAC action at 3:00 p.m.
