Guilford Baseball Handles Emory & Henry, 13-3, Tuesday Afternoon

EMORY, Va. – The Guilford College Baseball Team (20-13, 11-6 ODAC) scored eight runs across the first three innings on its way to a 13-3 win over Emory & Henry College (5-30, 2-18 ODAC) Tuesday afternoon in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action.

How It Happened
Guilford jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first, highlighted by a double by Brett Shapcott. E&H answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame on a home run by senior centerfielder Ben Sexton (Lebanon, Va.).

The Quakers extended the lead to 8-2 midway through the third before sophomore first baseman Joe Tolone (Concord, N.C.) hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to drive in senior shortstop Ross French (Bridgewater, Va.). Two runs in the fifth and three in the eighth for GC pushed the final margin to 13-3.

Mitchell Stumpo earned the win in relief for the Quakers, allowing just two hits in five innings while striking out eight. Wasp sophomore Noah Griffin (Fort Mill, S.C.) was hit with the loss, allowing seven runs on six hits.

Emory & Henry will conclude the 2019 season on Saturday when it visits Bridgewater College for an ODAC doubleheader. First pitch is set for noon.
