Emory & Henry Baseball Splits A Senior Day Doubleheader With Hampden-Sydney Saturday

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Baseball Team (9-25) split a doubleheader against former Old Dominion Athletic Conference rival Hampden-Sydney College (19-14) Saturday afternoon. The Wasps won game one by a 3-0 score while the Tigers claimed a 10-3 win in the second contest.

The games also served as Senior Day for the Wasps, who honored Kevan Lambert (Elliston, Va.), Josh Woodard (Culpeper, Va.), Will Reagan (Albany, Ga.) and Nathan Treadway (Valdese, N.C.) prior to first pitch.

Game One – Emory & Henry 3, Hampden-Sydney 0 (seven innings)
Emory & Henry got on the board in the bottom of the fourth as sophomore first baseman McCray Sawyers (Stuart, Va.) singled to right field, driving in sophomore third baseman Jared Foley (Sparta, N.C.).

The Wasps added another pair of runs in the sixth as Reagan hit a flare into right-center for the 3-0 final margin.

Wasp sophomore right-hander Will Clark (Collinsville, Va.) earned the win, scattering four hits and five strikeouts over 5.1 innings of work. Freshman Justin Day (Strasburg, Va.) got the save, pitching the final 1.2 innings in no-hit fashion with one strikeout. HSC's Justin Woodall went the distance, allowing three runs on five hits with four strikeouts in the losing effort.

Game Two – Hampden-Sydney 10, Emory & Henry 3 (seven innings)
E&H opened up a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second as junior left fielder Jackson Lancaster (Keeling, Va.) got a base hit to left. Freshman catcher Josh Howard (Salem, Va.) drew a bases loaded walk later in the frame while Foley drove in another run with a sacrifice fly.

The Tigers answered in the top of the third with a pair of runs to make it a 3-2 contest as Ryan Boyce had a RBI base knock in the frame. In the fourth, HSC tied the game, 3-3, on a triple down the right field line by Jaxon Masterson.

Hampden-Sydney went ahead in the fifth frame as Trey Karnes hit a double to centerfield. Another run in the sixth made it a 5-3 contest and five in the top of the seventh capped the scoring for the Tigers for the 10-3 win. Christian Chambers highlighted the last inning with a three-run home run to right field.

Owen Tappy earned the win in relief, allowing just one hit as he struck out three in 2.2 innings of shutout ball. E&H freshman Zack McRae (Greensboro, N.C.) suffered the loss, allowing two runs on one hit and two walks in 2.0 innings of work.
