The Wasps were able to load the bases in both the first and second innings, but could not push the opening run across and headed to the bottom of the third still square at 0-0. The Tornado struck first in the bottom of the third frame with five runs on four hits and one error to jump ahead 5-0.

King added to its lead in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI double from Preston Steele and a two-run home run off the bat of Derek Martin to push its advantage to 8-0. Both runners advanced on a balk and then came around to score on a two RBI double from junior designated hitter Lane Gay (Keedysville, Md.) to trim the deficit to 8-2.
