How It Happened
For the third time in as many games over the weekend, Carson-Newman was the first team on the scoreboard. The Eagles capitalized on two hit batsmen, a walked in run and a sacrifice fly to take a 2-0 lead after three innings.

The Wasps answered in the top of the fourth. Junior designated hitter Cole Cunningham (Wake Forest, N.C.) drew a walk and junior first baseman McCray Sawyers (Stuart, Va.) roped a single to put E&H in business. They each moved up on a fielder's choice and came around to score on an RBI single from senior Camden Bailey (Sterling, Ill.) to tie things up at 2-2. Carson-Newman responded in the bottom of the fourth, as they pounded out three hits and scored a run on a hit by pitch with the bases loaded to jump back in front 4-2.

The E&H bats came alive in the top of the fifth inning as senior infielder Noah Mazza (Plainfield, Ill.) doubled to lead off the frame and moved up on a single from junior infielder Jared Foley (Sparta, N.C.). Junior outfielder Tyler Bradley (Bessemer City, N.C.) singled home Mazza and junior Wayne Mize (Salisbury, N.C.) drew a walk to load the bases. Cunningham was hit by a pitch to drive in a run and another run was pushed across on a double play turned by Carson-Newman. The Wasps were not done in the inning as senior outfielder Jermie Greene, Jr. (Troutman, N.C.) drove an RBI single into the outfield to score Mize and give the visitors the 6-4 lead.

The Eagles responded once more with a run in the home half of the fifth and tied the game back up with a run in the sixth. Carson-Newman came up clutch in the late stages of the game, as shortstop Trey Miller launched a two-run home run over the outfield fence in the bottom of the eighth inning to push the home team back in front for good by the final score of 8-6.

Mason Mooney earned the win on the mound for the Eagles as he posted five scoreless innings of relief out of the bullpen, striking out two batters and only allowing three hits. Junior right-hander Hunter Kirkpatrick (Albany, Ore.) took the loss on the hill for the Wasps, giving up the game-deciding two run blast. Foley, Bradley, Mazza and Bailey each had two hits on the afternoon to lead the E&H offense.
