Catawba Baseball Defeats Emory & Henry, 4-0, Friday Night

SALISBURY, N.C. – The Catawba College Baseball Team (7-5, 1-0 SAC) edged Emory & Henry College (4-8, 0-1 SAC) on Friday evening, in what was the first South Atlantic Conference game in program history for the Wasps. The Catawba Indians rode a strong outing on the mound and took advantage of five E&H miscues in the 4-0 win.

How It Happened
The scoreboard was silent through the first two innings, but Catawba opened the scoring in the bottom of the third. Dylan Driver drove the first pitch that he saw over the fence in left center to give the home team the 1-0 lead. Catawba added another in the home half of the fourth when Cooper Bryson grounded into a double play to force in a run to make it 2-0.

The home team added insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth inning on a wild pitch and an RBI single from Cameron Mills to run the score to its final at 4-0. Austin Fine earned the win on the mound for Catawba as he went the distance, shutting out the Wasps while only allowing two hits and striking out seven batters. Junior right-hander Jack Swarbrick (Haverhill, Mass.) was the tough-luck loser as he threw six strong innings and surrendered just two earned runs. Junior designated hitter Lane Gay (Keedysville, Md.) and fifth-year shortstop Mason Lyda (Mills River, N.C.) had the lone two hits of the evening for the Wasps.
