UVA Wise Baseball Holds Off Emory & Henry, 11-7, In Non-Conference Contest Tuesday

WISE, Va. – The University of Virginia's College at Wise Baseball Team (13-20) opened up an 11-1 lead through six innings of play on its way to an 11-7 victory over Emory & Henry College (8-24) Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference matchup between the two Southwest Virginia schools.

How It Happened
The Cavaliers opened the game with three runs in the bottom of the first highlighted by D'Sean Prinkleton's RBI single to centerfield. Wise made it a 5-0 contest through two with RBI base knocks by Nick Badgett and D.J. Dickson.

In the top of the third, fifth-year shortstop Mason Lyda (Mills River, N.C.) put Emory & Henry on the board with a solo home run to center. UVA Wise answered with two in the bottom of the third to push the margin to 7-1 and added another pair in the fourth as Prinkleton and Cole Harness each tagged solo shots to left for a 9-1 advantage.

Wise scored single runs in the fifth and sixth to extend the lead to 11-1. E&H began to mount a comeback in the top of the seventh with a single to right field by junior designated hitter Cole Cunningham (Wake Forest, N.C.). The Wasps plated three in the eighth, highlighted by a two-run double down the right field line by senior centerfielder Tyler Bradley (Bessemer City, N.C.) to make it an 11-5 contest.

In the ninth, E&H got a run on a bases-loaded sacrifice fly by Lyda. The Wasps capped the scoring when senior right fielder Christian Schmidt (Fuquay-Varina, N.C.) scored on a throwing error after senior catcher Camden Bailey (Sterling, Ill.) stole second for the final 11-7 margin.

Jake Taylor earned the win for Wise in a declared staff day as he allowed just one hit on two strikeouts in two innings. E&H fifth-year right-hander Michael Owen (Charlotte, N.C.) suffered the loss, permitting six earned runs on nine hits despite striking out three in three innings of work.
