No. 8 Newberry Baseball Handles Emory & Henry, 15-2, In Series Opener Saturday

EMORY, Va. – The No. 8 nationally-ranked Newberry College Baseball Team (27-5, 11-2 SAC) defeated Emory & Henry College (8-25, 2-11 SAC) in game one of a three-game South Atlantic Conference series on Saturday afternoon. The Wolves slugged their way to a 15-2 victory.

How It Happened
Newberry got on the scoreboard first in the top of the first inning on an RBI single from third baseman Jonathan Velez to make it 1-0. The Wolves exploded for six more in the top of the second. Donovan Ford launched a two-run blast and Braylin Marine followed up with a solo shot to highlight the inning as Newberry increased its advantage out to 7-0. 

The Wasps answered with one run in the bottom of the second. Senior outfielder Jermie Greene, Jr. (Troutman, N.C.) doubled to left and came around to score on an RBI single from fifth-year shortstop Mason Lyda (Mills River, N.C.) to trim the deficit to 7-1. Newberry added two more in the top of the fifth on an error and an RBI groundout to push the lead back out to 9-1.

The Wolves struck again in the top of the sixth inning with RBI singles from Kade Faircloth and Jomar Lugo to make it 11-1 in favor of the visitors. Once again E&H chipped away in the bottom of the sixth as junior Wayne Mize (Salisbury, N.C.) led off with a double into rightfield and scored on a sacrifice fly from fifth-year first baseman Matthew Long (Willow Spring, N.C.) to reduce the Wolves' advantage to 11-2. Newberry tacked on four more runs over the final three innings and took the win by a 15-2 margin. 

Freshman Bennett Roemer earned the win on the mound for the Wolves as he went six innings, surrendering just two runs on five hits while striking out seven. Jonathan White earned the three-inning save, striking out five as he allowed just one hit. Junior righty Jack Swarbrick (Haverhill, Mass.) took the loss for the Wasps as he allowed nine runs on ten hits over four innings of work on the hill. Junior third baseman Jared Foley (Sparta, N.C.) extended his hit streak to 17 games in the losing effort.
