No. 8 Newberry Baseball Completes Series Sweep With 9-6 & 10-3 Wins Over Emory & Henry Sunday

EMORY, Va. – The No. 8 nationally-ranked Newberry College Baseball Team (29-5, 13-2 SAC) won both games of a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader over Emory & Henry College (8-27, 2-13 SAC) on Sunday afternoon. The Wolves took game one by a 9-6 margin and closed out the day with a 10-3 victory. 

The games served as Emory & Henry's inaugural Jackie Robinson Day, celebrating the milestone achieved nearly 76 years ago when Robinson broke the Major League Baseball color barrier with his Brooklyn Dodgers debut.

Game Two - Newberry 9, Emory & Henry 6
The two teams were held off of the scoreboard through the first two innings but the Wolves broke the seal in the top of the third inning. Braylin Marine drilled a single into left field to plate two runs and give Newberry the early 2-0 lead. 

The Wasps responded in the home half of the inning with two runs of their own. Junior shortstop Jared Foley (Sparta, N.C.) reached on a fielder's choice and scored on an errant throw after senior outfielder Tyler Bradley (Bessemer City, N.C.) rapped a single into right field to trim into the Wolves' lead. Junior outfielder Wayne Mize (Salisbury, N.C.) then singled and Bradley scored on a Newberry error to tie the game at 2-2.

Newberry added one in the fourth on an RBI double from Brody Winter and one in the fifth on a sacrifice fly from Marine to run the score to 4-2. The Wolves tacked on two more in the sixth on another sacrifice fly and an RBI single off the bat of Jomar Lugo to increase their advantage to 6-2. 

The visitors added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh on a sacrifice squeeze and another RBI knock from Winter to make it 8-2. Junior second baseman Triston Hensley (Covington, Va.) and Foley led off with back-to-back base knocks and both scored on a two-RBI double from Bradley to close the gap to 8-4. Fifth-year first baseman Matthew Long (Willow Spring, N.C.) got the bottom of the eighth underway with his fourth long ball of the year to pull the Wasps within three at 8-5. Each team posted a run in the ninth but the Wolves held on for the 9-6 win.

Ethan LeBron earned the victory on the hill for the Wolves as he went six innings while allowing only one earned run and seven hits. Junior righty Bryson Wagner (Salisbury, N.C.) was saddled with the loss after giving up six runs, only three earned, and eleven hits in six innings of work while fanning six Newberry batters.

Game Three - Newberry 10, Emory & Henry 2 (seven innings)
Marine launched a solo home run in the top of the first to get game two underway and give the Wolves the 1-0 lead. The Wasps would answer and take the lead in the bottom of the first. Foley drew a walk and Bradley singled to lead off the inning. E&H then pulled off a double steal that saw Bradley take second and Foley slide into home to tie the score at 1-1. Junior designated hitter McCray Sawyers (Stuart, Va.) singled through the right side to plate Bradley and give E&H the 2-1 advantage. 

The Wolves were able to manufacture a run in the top of the fourth with a single, hit-by-pitch, sacrifice bunt and a sacrifice fly to tie the game back up at 2-2. Newberry used small ball again in the visiting half of the fifth with back-to-back hits, a sacrifice bunt, and an RBI fielder's choice from Jacob LeBron to push back ahead 3-2. Marine drove in his second run of game two to make it a 4-2 ballgame. Newberry posted six runs over the final two innings to take game two by a 10-2 final score.

Trevor Linahan earned the win for the Wolves as he went four innings, surrendering just two hits while punching out five Wasp batters. Junior right-handed pitcher Andrew Parr (Opelika, Ala.) took the loss for Emory & Henry as he allowed four runs and seven hits while striking out four over five innings of work.
