Emory & Henry Baseball Drops Season Opener to Georgia Southwestern, 10-2, Friday Evening

AMERICUS, Ga. – The Georgia Southwestern University Baseball Team (1-0) utilized a strong start on the mound and tallied 11 hits on its way to a win over Emory & Henry College (0-1) in the season opener for both teams Friday night.

How It Happened
Both teams were kept off of the scoreboard in the opening inning, but the Hurricanes struck first in the bottom of the second on a solo home run from Kalvin Alexander. E&H answered back in the top of the fourth. Senior outfielder Matt Hill (Pineville, N.C.) drew a walk to lead off the inning and advanced to second on a single from fifth-year outfielder Tyler Bradley (Bessemer City, N.C.). Hill moved up to third on a flyout and fifth-year outfielder Jermie Greene, Jr. (Troutman, N.C.) picked up where he left off last season with an RBI single to left that extended his hitting streak to 12 games, tying things up at 1-1. 

Georgia Southwestern jumped back in front in the bottom half of the fourth on a two-run single off the bat of Brant Deerman to make it 3-1. GSW tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the sixth with a pair of walks with the bases loaded to increase the margin to 5-1. The Wasps got a run back in the top of the seventh when Greene, Jr. singled, junior designated hitter Jacob Bebber (Taylorsville, N.C.) drew a walk and Greene, Jr. came around to score on a throwing error following a single by sophomore catcher Garrison Bullock (Concord, N.C.). The Hurricanes would go on to add three runs in the bottom of the seventh and two more in the home half of the eighth as they rolled to the 10-2 season-opening victory.

Nick McCollum earned the win on the hill for GSW as he surrendered just four hits and one run over six innings. Fifth-year starter Zach Clover (Cary, N.C.) took the loss for E&H as he gave up six hits and three runs while issuing a pair of walks over four innings of work. Greene, Jr. led the Wasps with a pair of hits and an RBI while senior third baseman Jared Foley (Sparta, N.C.) also contributed a pair of knocks.
