Emory & Henry Baseball Splits Doubleheader With Anderson For First SAC Win

ANDERSON, S.C. – The Emory & Henry College Baseball Team (2-13, 1-7 SAC) bounced back from a loss in game one to earn a win in the nightcap of a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader against Anderson (S.C.) University (9-7, 3-5 SAC) Sunday afternoon. The Trojans took the opener 10-1 before the Wasps earned the 3-0 shutout victory in the second game.

Game One - Anderson 10, Emory & Henry 1
After a scoreless first, the Trojans got on the board first with a pair of runs on four hits to take an early 2-0 lead. Both teams were held off of the scoreboard in the third and fourth innings, before Anderson widened the gap in the fifth. AU tacked on five more runs, utilizing six hits and capitalizing on two E&H errors to balloon the margin out to 7-0. 

The Wasps got a run back in the top of the sixth when senior outfielder Matt Hill (Pineville, N.C.) and fifth-year outfielder Tyler Bradley (Bessemer City, N.C.) led off with back-to-back singles and Hill came around to score on an RBI single by fifth-year designated hitter Jermie Greene, Jr. (Troutman, N.C.). The Trojans added three insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to take game one of the doubleheader 10-1. 

Ben Smith earned the win on the mound as he scattered seven hits and one run over 6 ⅓ innings while striking out seven batters. Fifth-year pitcher Zach Clover (Cary, N.C.) took the loss for Emory & Henry after giving up eight runs in seven innings of work. Greene, Jr. led the E&H offense with three hits and the lone RBI of the game.

Game Two - Emory & Henry 3, Anderson 0 (Seven Innings)
The Wasps took the lead in game two on a solo home run off the bat of Hill to jump ahead 1-0 after three innings. E&H struck again in the top of the sixth after senior shortstop Jared Foley (Sparta, N.C.) led off the inning with a triple and touched home on an RBI single by Hill to make it 2-0. 

Emory & Henry added another in the top of the seventh when junior third baseman Steven Smith (Salisbury, N.C.) was hit by a pitch, moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt and took third on a failed pickoff attempt. Senior first baseman Nate Vasquez (Copperas Cove, Texas) delivered a sacrifice fly to score Smith and the lead stood at 3-0 in favor of the visitors. Senior righty Bryson Wagner (Salisbury, N.C.) shut down the Trojans in the seventh to clinch the first South Atlantic Conference victory of the season for the Wasps.

Wagner spun a gem on the hill for E&H as he went all seven innings, allowing just four hits while fanning 10 batters. Ben Thornton was the tough luck loser for Anderson, giving up two hits and one run over five innings. Hill paced the Wasps' offense with a pair of hits and a pair of RBIs. Foley, senior designated hitter Caeden Howell (Roaring River, N.C.) and freshman second baseman Devin Daproza (Leonia, N.J) each recorded a base knock in the win.
