Emory & Henry Baseball Drops Doubleheader To Newberry, 5-1 & 3-0, In Season Finale

NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Emory & Henry College Baseball Team (11-38, 6-24 SAC) fell in both games of a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader to Newberry College (24-25, 18-12 SAC) in what was the regular season finale for the Wasps. The Wolves took game one 5-1 before completing the sweep with a 3-0 victory in game two.

Game One - Newberry 5, Emory & Henry 1
The Wolves jumped ahead in game one with a run on three hits and an error in the bottom of the second inning. The Wasps would respond in the top of the fourth. Fifth-year outfielder Tyler Bradley (Bessemer City, N.C.) singled, advanced to second on a wild pitch and moved up to third on a single from sophomore catcher Garrison Bullock (Concord, N.C.). Fifth-year outfielder Jermie Greene, Jr. (Troutman, N.C.) delivered an RBI single to plate Bradley and tie the game at 1-1 through four innings. 

Both teams were held scoreless over the following three innings, but Newberry struck for four more runs on the back of five hits and another Wasps' error in the bottom of the eighth inning to take the win by a 5-1 margin. John Rollings earned the win for Newberry as he went three shutout innings, allowing just two hits while striking out a pair of batters. Senior pitcher Jack Swarbrick (Haverhill, Mass.) took the loss for E&H after surrendering four runs, three earned, and six hits over 3 ⅔ innings. Redshirt freshman lefty Drew Lanzo (Indian Trail, N.C.) received the no decision after giving up just one unearned run and four hits over four innings on the mound. Greene, Jr. and junior first baseman Jacob Bebber (Taylorsville, N.C.) paced the Wasps' offense with a pair of hits each.

Game Two - Newberry 3, Emory & Henry 0 (Seven Innings)
Newberry took another early lead in game two of the doubleheader as the Wolves scored a run in each of the first, second and third innings to establish a 3-0 advantage. The Wolves' pitching staff was dominant in the nightcap as they limited the Wasps to just four hits en route to the 3-0 shutout victory. 

Johnathan White was the winning pitcher for the home squad as he threw a scoreless fifth inning, surrendering just one base hit. Senior righty Bryson Wagner (Salisbury, N.C.) was the tough-luck loser for E&H after he went all six innings on the mound, allowing three runs on six base hits while fanning four Wolves batters. Bebber, junior third baseman Steven Smith (Salisbury, N.C.), fifth-year outfielder Christian Schmidt (Fuquay-Varina, N.C.) and fifth-year second baseman Noah Mazza (Plainfield, Ill.) each had a hit in the loss for the Wasps.
