Roth Healey Named ODAC Defensive Player Of The Week

FOREST, Va. - Emory & Henry College senior safety Roth Healey has been named the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week, ODAC officials announced Sunday. The Easton, Pennsylvania, native wins the award for the first time in his career. It is the first time since week two of the 2013 season that a player from the defensive backfield has been recognized by the league office.

Healey helped Emory & Henry rally from a 13-0 halftime deficit for a 14-13 victory over Maryville (Tenn.) College Saturday afternoon at L.L. Thornton Stadium. He posted a team-high nine tackles (six solo), a tackle for loss, a second-quarter interception and a pass break-up.

The senior's most impressive and important accomplishment was a 72-yard fumble recovery in the third quarter for the Wasps' first score of the game. Emory & Henry's four takeaways, two of which led directly to scores, are the most since three picks and a fumble recovery against Methodist (Sept. 21) last year.

It is the second time in as many weeks that a Wasp is featured as one of the conference's top performers. E&H freshman quarterback Kevin Saxton (Monroe, N.C.) was the ODAC Offensive Player of the Week for Week One. In Week 10 last season, then-junior linebacker Paul Forney (Newton, N.C.) was defensive player of the week for his efforts in Emory & Henry's win over Shenandoah.

Emory & Henry will have its annual bye week on Saturday, September 20. The Wasps return to the field with their final non-conference game on September 27 when they travel to Sewanee, Tennessee to face off against The University of the South. The contest between E&H and Sewanee is set to kick off at 1:00 p.m. Central Daylight Time (2:00 p.m. Eastern).
