Rennel Marshall Named ODAC Defensive Player Of The Week

FOREST, Va. - Emory & Henry College junior linebacker Rennel Marshall has been named the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week, ODAC officials announced Sunday. The Rustburg, Virginia, native wins the award for the first time in his career. It is the third time in four weeks that an E&H defender has earned weekly honors from the league.

Marshall notched 10 tackles, nine of them solo, in Emory & Henry's 36-9 win over Washington and Lee University Saturday. He added two tackles for a loss of seven yards and forced a fumble which led to the Wasps going up 21-0 early in the second quarter.

The Liberty Christian Academy graduate put his name in the scoring column with 5:19 left in the first half when he scooped up a fumbled snap on a PAT try and returned it for a defensive two-point conversion. The score gave the Wasps a 30-6 advantage over the Generals, effectively sealing the win prior to the intermission.

The Wasps' victory over the Generals was the first since the 2009 season and only the fourth in the last 13 years. Emory & Henry held W&L's triple-option attack to 285 yards on the afternoon, the fewest since 2011.

It is the fifth time this season that a Wasp is featured as one of the conference's top performers. E&H freshman quarterback Kevin Saxton (Monroe, N.C.) was the ODAC Offensive Player of the Week for Week One. Senior safety Roth Healey (Easton, Pa.) was selected as the ODAC Defensive Player of the Week in Week Two while sophomore corner Tre'von Lightfoot (Big Island, Va.) and senior safety Clint Peregoy (Salem, Va.) earned defensive honors in Weeks Six and Eight, respectively.

Emory & Henry (7-1, 4-1 ODAC) will look to notch an eight-win season for the first time since 2000 when it hosts Shenandoah University (4-4, 2-3 ODAC) Saturday at Fred Selfe Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
