Roth Healey Named ODAC Defensive Player Of The Week

FOREST, Va. - Emory & Henry College senior safety Roth Healey has been named the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week, ODAC officials announced Sunday. The Easton, Pennsylvania, native wins the award for the second time this season. It is the fourth time in five weeks that an E&H defender has earned weekly honors from the league.

Healey, who won the award for his efforts in Week Two's win against Maryville, made nine tackles and recorded four takeaways in Emory & Henry's 42-34 win against Shenandoah Saturday afternoon. The senior had three first-half interceptions, including one which he returned to the one-foot line, setting up a touchdown to give the Wasps a 28-0 lead. He also recovered a fumble to stall a fourth-quarter drive by the Hornets inside E&H territory.

The Wilson Area High School graduate currently leads the league in interceptions (six) and takeaways (10) and is fifth in tackles (81). It marks the first time since 2012 when Washington and Lee's Jake Pelton picked off three passes that an ODAC player had a trio of interceptions in a game. Devan Sproles was the last Wasp to accomplish the feat (2011 at Guilford). It is also the first time since 1996 when Thomas Nelson picked off four passes that an E&H player had four takeaways in a game.

The Wasps' victory over the Hornets kept an ODAC Championship in play for Emory & Henry. An E&H win next week, paired with a Hampden-Sydney loss, will give the Wasps a conference championship and guarantee a trip to the NCAA Division III Playoffs for the first time since 2000.

It is the sixth time this season that a Wasp is featured as one of the conference's top performers. E&H freshman quarterback Kevin Saxton (Monroe, N.C.) was the ODAC Offensive Player of the Week for Week One. Sophomore corner Tre'von Lightfoot (Big Island, Va.) was the Defensive Player of the Week in Week Six while and senior safety Clint Peregoy (Salem, Va.) and junior linebacker Rennel Marshall (Rustburg, Va.) earned defensive honors in Weeks Eight and Nine, respectively.

Emory & Henry (8-1, 5-1 ODAC) will look to do its part in capturing an ODAC title and berth in the playoffs next Saturday when it hosts Guilford College (7-2, 4-2 ODAC) Saturday at Fred Selfe Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
