Hampden-Sydney Football Pulls Away From Emory & Henry, 56-27, Saturday Afternoon

HAMPDEN SYDNEY, Va. – The Hampden-Sydney College Football Team (1-2, 1-0 ODAC) scored 35 points after the break to earn a 56-27 win over visiting Emory & Henry College (2-1, 1-1 ODAC) Saturday afternoon.

How It Happened
- E&H got on the board first thanks to a three-yard touchdown run by senior Sam Wagner (Marion, Va.).
- Alec Cobb tied the game for the Tigers with a one-yard plunge on the ensuing drive and then threw a 21-yard pass to Major Morgan for the 14-7 lead after one quarter.
- The two squads traded touchdowns in the second for a 21-14 halftime score. Sophomore quarterback Hunter Taylor (Summerville, S.C.) went in from three yards out for E&H while HSC got its score on a five-yard run by Kaleb Smith.
- After the intermission, Hampden-Sydney scored touchdowns on five of their seven possessions led off by Morgan's second catch from Cobb, this time a 17-yarder.
- E&H closed the gap to 35-21 on a 22-yard touchdown catch by junior Derrick Yates (Abingdon, Va.) with 3:52 to go in the third.
- The Tigers then score three straight touchdowns to press their margin to 56-21. Cobb found Brandon Smith and Blake Page for receptions of 11 and 10 yards, respectively to bookend Smith's third rushing score of the day.
- With 2:45 left to play, Emory & Henry freshman Robert Henesey (Poquoson, Va.) punched one in from a yard out to make the final score 56-27.

Emory & Henry Individual Leaders
- Taylor threw for 212 yards on 12-for-25 passing for a touchdown, but also had a pair of picks. Taylor was the Wasps leading rusher with 26 yards and a score on the ground.
- Senior wideout Jesse Santiago (Yorktown, Va.) caught five passes for 125 yards while Yates finished the game with three catches for 55 yards.
- Junior defensive back Cecil Parham (Petersburg, Va.) made a team-high 12 tackles while senior defensive lineman Levi Peters (Hot Springs, Va.) added eight stops.
- Sophomore defensive back Tyler Redmond (Arden, N.C.) had seven tackles, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery while sophomore defensive back Justin Economou (Woodstock, Ga.) also forced a fumble.

Hampden-Sydney Individual Leaders
- Cobb finished the day with 514 yards through the air for four touchdowns and ran for a fifth score.
- Smith scored three times on 22 touches for 74 yards and caught 10 passes for 105 yards.
- Morgan had a pair of touchdowns and 181 yards on 11 catches while Page notched 109 receiving yards on eight balls.
- Griffin Davis and Chad Vanlandingham each had seven tackles with Vanlandingham making three tackles for loss and forcing a fumble. Brendan Wineberg and Hunter Carr both had interceptions while Brandon Riggs also forced a fumble.

A Deeper Look
- Hampden-Sydney put up 633 yards of total offense, 544 of which came through the air. E&H was held to less than 100 rushing yards (71) for the first time since facing the Tigers on October 28 of last year.
- HSC averaged an even 7.0 yards per play, outgaining the Wasps by 2.5 yards per snap.
- The Tigers won the battle for possession, holding the ball for 33:06 but committed seven penalties for 62 yards.

Up Next
- Emory & Henry will play its first home game of the 2018 season next Saturday when it hosts Thomas More College at 1:00 p.m.
- It will be the first-ever regular season meeting between the two programs. E&H defeated Thomas More, 17-0, in the First Round of the 1992 NCAA Division III Playoffs.
