No. 25 Bridgewater Football Stymies Emory & Henry, 35-3, Saturday In ODAC Showdown

EMORY, Va. – The No. 25 Bridgewater College Football Team (8-0, 6-0 ODAC) remained perfect on the year and inched closer to its first Old Dominion Athletic Conference title since 2005 as it defeated Emory & Henry College (5-3, 4-2 ODAC), 35-3, Saturday afternoon.

The loss by the Wasps snapped a five-game winning streak as their three points scored is the fewest since being shut out by Randolph-Macon College in 2009.

How It Happened
- Bridgewater got on the board with a special teams touchdown at the 11:24 mark of the first quarter when Matt Dang recovered a blocked punt in the end zone. The Eagles made it 14-0 on a 49-yard catch and run by Devonte Smith from Jay Scroggins with 3:26 to go in the opening period.
- In the second, BC extended its lead to 21-0 as Scroggins hit Matt DeMasi from five yards out with 13:47 to go before the break.
- Emory & Henry went down the field 3:27 later and made it 21-3 on a 28-yard field goal by senior Matt Seals (Rogersville, Tenn.).
- After the break, the Eagles scored touchdowns in the third and fourth quarters for the final 35-3 margin. Scroggins made it three passing touchdowns on the afternoon with a 23-yard pass to Devonte Smith while Albert Mensah ran one in from seven yards out.

Emory & Henry Individual Leaders
- Emory & Henry managed just 190 yards of total offense, its fewest of the season as junior quarterback Hunter Taylor (Summerville, S.C.) threw for 90 yards on 8-for-19 passing.
- Freshman T.J.  Tester (Moneta, Va.) ran for 37 yards while sophomore Brady Justice (Grundy, Va.) had 19 yards on the ground.
- Junior wideout Gunner Griffith (Bluff City, Tenn.) had four catches for 75 yards while senior Derrick Yates (Abingdon, Va.) caught four balls for 53 yards.
- Defensively, senior lineman Josh Fleenor (Christiansburg, Va.) made 11 stops while sophomore linebacker Ivan Phillips (Kingsport, Tenn.) finished with 10 tackles.

Bridgewater Individual Leaders
- Scroggins went 16-for-30 for 236 yards and three touchdowns hitting eight different recievers. Smith was his favorite target with five receptions for 138 yards and two scores.
- Mensah had nine carries for 53 yards and a score while Demetreus Jalepes had 33 yards on the ground.
- Gary Ramey, Jr. led the Eagles with seven stops while Deshomd Denny and Re'Shaun Myers had six tackles and Denny added two sacks.

- Emory & Henry will be on the road next week when it visits Guilford College. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
