Emory & Henry Football Routs Guilford 66-13, On Jordan’s Record-Setting Day Saturday

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Senior running back Devontae Jordan (Bassett, Va.) rushed into history Saturday afternoon as he led Emory & Henry College (5-4) to a 66-13 win over Guilford College (1-7). Jordan set the E&H record for rushing touchdowns in a season (23) and rushing touchdowns in a game (five) while tying the school mark for total touchdowns (six).

The 66 points scored by the Wasps was the most since posting 70 markers against the same Quakers' squad in 2018 and the 53-point margin of victory was the best since a 61-7 win over Maryville (Tenn.) College in 1990.

How It Happened
   Emory & Henry opened up a 24-0 lead after the first quarter behind three rushing touchdowns from Jordan and a 30-yard field goal from junior Cameron Jones (Jacksonville, N.C.). Jordan scored from 53, 42 and seven yards out in the period.
   The second frame was saw the Wasps post another 28 points, 21 coming at the hands of Jordan. The Bassett, Virginia native rushed for 27- and 20-yard scores and caught a 44-yard pass from sophomore quarterback Kyle Short (Lebanon, Ohio). E&H's final score of the half to make a 52-0 score at the intermission came from sophomore quarterback Carter Everett (Elizabethton, Tenn.) on a one-yard plunge.
   Guilford got on the board in the third with 8:21 on the clock as Derrien Phillips broke off a 72-yard run. The Wasps answered with a nine-play, 73-yard drive that culminated in a one-yard run for a touchdown by junior running back Mykah English (Roanoke, Va.).
   In the fourth quarter, GC scored on a five-yard run by Joseph Brown, Jr. but the two-point conversion was unsuccessful to make the score 59-13. Emory & Henry capped the scoring as Everett found freshman wide receiver River Carter (Abingdon, Va.) with a 15-yard pass for the final 66-13 margin.

Emory & Henry Individual Leaders
   Jordan set a new Emory & Henry record with nine 100-yard rushing games in a season as he rushed just 16 times for 198 yards and five touchdowns, adding one catch for 44 yards and a sixth score.
   Short was 7-for-10 through the air for 165 yards and a touchdown while Everett finished 7-for-12 for 145 yards and a score.
   Freshman wideout Jack Crumblish (Clermont, Fla.) was one of nine Wasps to catch a pass as he had three receptions for 89 yards. English finished the game with 91 yards on the ground and a score.
   Defensively, four different Wasps posted six tackles led by senior linebacker Ivan Phillips (Kingsport, Tenn.) as he added a pass defended. Junior defensive lineman Jordon Mighty (Catlett, Va.) had five stops and two tackles for loss including a sack.

Guilford Individual Leaders
   Phillips led the Quakers' offense with one touchdown on 106 rushing yards and was 2-for-7 passing for just 14 yards. Caleb Gibson rushed nine times for 38 yards as nine players carried the ball for GC on the afternoon.
   Ty Walker had eight tackles to lead the Guilford defense while Trey Buie made seven stops and had one pass defended.

A Deeper Look
   Emory & Henry racked up 663 yards of total offense, rushing for 353 yards. It was the third time this season that the Wasps have run for over 300 yards and the third-most total offense overall and most since a 712-yard day at Guilford in 2017.
   The Wasps had 31 first downs on the afternoon compared to just eight for the Quakers and led time of possession by a 34:00-26:00 margin. E&H was 6-for-11 (55%) on third down and held GC to just 27 percent (4-for-15) for its third-down conversions.

   Emory & Henry closes out the 2021 season next Saturday when it hosts Ferrum College in the Crooked Road Classic. Kickoff between the Wasps and Panthers is set for 1:00 p.m.
