Mitchell Walters is entering his sixth year as an Assistant Football Coach at Emory & Henry University, where he serves as the Defensive Coordinator, Special Teams Coordinator, Recruiting Coordinator, and Safeties Coach.
The fall of 2024 marked his first season as Defensive Coordinator. The Wasp’s defense led all NCAA divisions in turnovers (33), interceptions (27), and defensive touchdowns (seven). Additionally, they ranked nationally third in Pass Efficiency Defense, 13th in Scoring Defense, and 15th in Total Defense. Walters coached 10 All-South Atlantic Conference players, including eight on defense and two on special teams. Notably, Shawn Collins earned recognition as a Don Hansen All-American.
From 2021 to 2023, Walters held the roles of Special Teams Coordinator and Defensive Backs Coach. In 2023, the Wasp defense led Division II in interceptions (21). The special teams’ units also excelled, leading the South Atlantic Conference in Kick Return Average, Net Punts, Blocked Kicks, Blocked Punts, Kick Return Touchdowns, and Field Goals Made. They ranked nationally 6th in Kick Return Average and 11th in Blocked Punts. Walters coached four players who received All-South Atlantic Conference honors, with three on Special Teams and one Safety. During 2022, Emory & Henry’s first year in the South Atlantic Conference, the Wasps ranked eighth in Division II for blocked kicks and second in the SAC for interceptions. In 2021, the defense improved in national passing defense statistics, ranking 5th in Division III for Pass Efficiency Defense and ninth in Passing Yard Defense. Walters also oversaw the team’s academics and NCAA eligibility.
In his first year, Walters served as Defensive Quality Control Coach, working with the linebackers. The Wasp defense achieved remarkable statistics, ranking first in Division III for Sacks, third in Total Defense, fifth in Rush Defense, and fifth in Scoring Defense.
Walters was a four-year member of the football team as an undergraduate but spent his final two seasons as a student-assistant coach after being sidelined by injury.
A four-time ODAC All-Academic Team selection and a charter member of the College's chapter of Chi Alpha Sigma, Walters graduated summa cum laude from E&H in 2020 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in sport management and a Bachelor of Science degree in management.
