DANVILLE, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Men's Basketball Team (2-1) defeated Averett University (0-3) in a rout, 83-62 behind a career-high 22 points by junior guard Kyle Sensabaugh (Columbus, Ohio) in Averett's Cougar Classic Saturday afternoon. It was the second straight career performance by Sensabaugh.
Emory & Henry got out to a 7-2 lead just 3:31 into the contest, with the first five points coming from Sensabaugh. Late in the first half, the Wasps then swarmed over the Cougars, going on a 16-1 run over a 5:11 period for a 15-35 advantage. Sensabaugh had six points over the stretch and freshman Carlos Sanchez (Bronx, N.Y.) added five for E&H.
The Wasps would take a 43-24 lead into the half as they shot 51.5 percent (17-for-33) compared to just 33.3 percent (8-for-24) for the Cougars.
After the break, E&H pushed its lead to 24 (51-27) early in the half and led by 15 points or more for all but 18 seconds of the frame. Emory & Henry was 15-for-25 (60 percent) from the floor and hit 75 percent (6-of-8) of its attempts from behind the arc after intermission.
Sensabaugh finished the night with 22 points, breaking his personal record that stood for less than 24 hours, and added three rebounds, three assists and three steals. He was eight-for-nine from the floor including hitting six-of-seven shots from long range.
Sophomore forward Tyler Mullins (Hazard, Ky.) had a career-high 16 points and added a team-high seven rebounds while sophomore forward Charles Smith (Fayetteville, N.C.) and freshman guard Damian Edwards (Boone, N.C.) each chipped in nine points apiece for the Wasps while Edwards had five assists in the game.
Averett placed four players in double figures led by Jonathan Setters with 13 while Grant Chandler and Marquis Scott had 12 points each despite the loss. The Cougars shot 46.2 percent (24-for-52) but were just 5-for-15 from three-point range.
Emory & Henry will continue its run in non-conference play on Tuesday when it travels to face Ferrum College at 7:00 p.m.
