Emory & Henry Men’s Basketball Downs Maryland Bible, 70-58, Saturday Afternoon

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Men's Basketball Team (6-5) moved to over .500 on the year with a 70-58 victory over Maryland Bible College Saturday afternoon at the King Center.

The Wasps jumped out to an 11-0 lead in the first 4:06 of the contest, but eight straight points by the Soldiers closed the gap to 11-8. MBC put together a 12-3 run to take the lead at 22-21 with 9:10 remaining the opening period. Two and a half minutes later, Emory & Henry responded with a 15-2 spurt to go into the intermission with a 14-point lead (42-28).

After the break, E&H maintained its double-digit lead and pushed the advantage to 17 points (55-38 at 11:59). The Soldiers would get no closer than 11 points down the stretch as the Wasps cruised to finish 2011 with a three-game win streak.

Emory & Henry junior guard Malcolm Green (Marshville, N.C.) led all scorers with 16 points and added six rebounds on the night while sophomore forward Tyler Mullins (Hazard, Ky.) had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore forward Charles Smith (Fayetteville, N.C.) and freshman guard Damian Edwards (Boone, N.C.) each pitched in 10 points for the Wasps.

Maryland Bible was paced by Miles Blair with 14 points on four-for-six field goal shooting and a six-for-eight mark at the charity stripe. Al Carr (12 points) and Quintin Harris (11 points, 10 rebounds) also had standout performances for the Soldiers.

E&H shot 40.9 percent (27-for-66) from the floor on the day and held a 52-31 rebounding advantage with 24 offensive boards.

Emory & Henry will return to Old Dominion Athletic Conference action on Wednesday when the Quakers of Guilford College visit Southwest Virginia. Tip time is set for 7:00 p.m.
