EMORY, Va. – The Guilford College Men's Basketball Team (9-4, 3-1 ODAC) escaped the John Rutledge King Center with a 58-57 overtime victory over Emory & Henry College (6-6, 0-4 ODAC) Wednesday evening in Old Dominion Athletic Conference play. The Wasps dropped their first game since December 5 and see a three-game winning streak snapped at the hands of the Quakers.
Guilford got out to a 5-0 lead in the first two minutes of play and extended their lead to 9-3 at the 14:53 mark. A 10-4 run by the Wasps tied the contest at 13, but the Quakers responded with a 10-3 run over the final 5:05 of the half for a 23-16 lead at the break.
After the intermission, Guilford pushed its lead to nine at the 11:07 mark (35-26), its largest advantage of the game. Emory & Henry scored 10-straight points to take its first lead of the game with 7:34 left to play. Junior guard Malcolm Green (Marshville, N.C.) had six of the Wasps' points in the stretch.
The Quakers responded and got back out to an eight point lead, but E&H wouldn't be undone and put together a 9-0 run of their own to go back ahead with 2:06 remaining. Both teams battled back and forth over the final 110 seconds of regulation and would go into overtime knotted at 50.
Guilford got three-straight baskets to open the period from Josh Pittman to take a 56-52 lead with 3:46 remaining. The Wasps cut the Quakers' advantage to one with 69 seconds on the clock on a three-pointer by freshman guard Damian Edwards (Boone, N.C.). Both teams missed shots down the stretch, to end the contest with a 58-57 score.
Pittman led Guilford with 19 points and added four assists and four steals. Carson Sullivan pitched in 13 points and six boards and Brad Monroe had eight points and seven rebounds.
Emory & Henry was paced by Green with a game high 20 points as he went six-for-12 from the floor and six-for-six from the charity stripe. Edwards finished the night with 15 points and led all players with four three-pointers made. Junior guard Kyle Sensabaugh (Columbus, Ohio) had 12 rebounds for the Wasps as well.
E&H will conclude its six-game homestand on Saturday when Randolph College visits Bob Johnson Court. The contest is set to tip off at 2:00 p.m.
