EMORY, Va. – Emory & Henry College junior guard Malcolm Green (Marshville, N.C.) electrified the crowd at Bob Johnson Court Wednesday night, putting up a career-high 31 points to lead the Wasps (10-12, 4-9 ODAC) to an 88-81 victory over the Maroons of Roanoke College (6-16, 2-11 ODAC) in Old Dominion Athletic Conference Action.
Emory & Henry surged out to a 9-0 lead, two three's coming from Green with 18:09 on the clock. Roanoke was able to close the gap to six (13-7), but the Maroons stirred the Wasps' nest. Over the next 7:10, E&H scored 24 unanswered points for a 37-7 lead at the 7:52 mark.
RC was able to chip into the seemingly insurmountable lead and got within 12 (44-32 with 1:18 remaining) late in the first half. Four straight points by sophomore forward Jorel Terrell (Port Saint Lucie, Fla.) closed the opening frame for the Wasps, who took a 48-32 lead into the locker room.
Emory & Henry pushed its lead back to 20 (54-34) with a 6-2 run to start the second half. The Maroons once again began their journey to cut into the Wasps' advantage. An 18-8 spurt by Roanoke trimmed the margin to 10 (62-52 at 10:23) but E&H once again was able to extend the gap to 19.
Down by 14 with 2:54 remaining, the Maroons scored six straight points to cut the Wasps lead to single digits for the first time since 13:48 in the first half. Roanoke got within seven points on three occasions down the stretch, but would get no closer as Emory & Henry came away with the 88-81 win.
Green finished the night with 31 points on 10-for-12 shooting with two three-pointers made. He also hit 9-of-11 from the free throw line on his career night. It was the most points scored by an Emory & Henry player since Terrance Grigg netted 33 against Hiwassee College on January 2, 2011.
E&H junior guard Kyle Sensabaugh (Columbus, Ohio) tallied 14 points on the night, hitting four treys and pulling down eight rebounds. Junior forward Armando Murrell (Brooklyn, N.Y.) had 13 points on five-for-five shooting and added four rebounds while Terrell finished the game with 11 points.
The Wasps shot 50.9 percent (29-for-57) from the field and hit 6-of-15 (40.0 percent) of their attempts from beyond the arc. E&H was 24-for-35 (68.6 percent) from the charity stripe and held a 41-35 advantage on the boards.
Roanoke was paced by Kwasi Amponsah, who tallied 23 points before fouling out. Barrett Hunter chipped in 14 points on the night while Stefan Vulevic added 11 points. Logan Singleton recorded the only double-double in the contest with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Emory & Henry will remain at home on Saturday when it welcomes Eastern Mennonite University in an ODAC showdown. The contest, which is scheduled to tip at 2:00 p.m., will also serve as Senior Day for the Wasps.
