Washington and Lee Men’s Basketball Defeats Emory & Henry, 67-50, In ODAC Tournament First Round

EMORY, Va. – The Washington and Lee University Men's Basketball Team (13-13) advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2012 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament with a 67-50 win over Emory & Henry College (12-14) Tuesday evening at Bob Johnson Court.

The two squads batted for the first six minutes of the contest to a 10-10 tie. A 7-2 run by the Generals gave them a 17-12 advantage with 11:56 remaining, but the Wasps put together a 7-2 scoring spurt of their own to knot the game at 19. After a fourth tie at 23 points apiece, W&L scored the final five points of the half to go into the break, up 28-23.

Washington and Lee outscored Emory & Henry, 10-5, to start the second half for the first double-digit lead of the contest at 38-28. The Wasps were able to close the gap to five points (41-36 with 12:27 remaining) but would get no closer, as the Generals steadily built a lead over the final 8:50 of the contest to win 67-50.

W&L saw four players reach double figures in scoring, led by Javon McDonald, who made four three-point baskets en route to an 18-point night. Jeremy Adkins had 11 points while Larry Whitaker and Kevin Gill each pitched in 10 points for the Generals.

As a team, Washington and Lee shot 59.0 percent (23-for-39) for the game including a blistering 13-for-17 (76.5 percent) in the second half. The Generals also held a 31-28 advantage on the glass.

Emory & Henry junior forward Armando Murrell (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led all players with 19 points and 12 rebounds while freshman guard Damian Edwards (Boone, N.C.) had 14 points and five boards. The Wasps shot just 20-for-55 (36.7 percent) for the game and were 2-for-16 from beyond the arc.

E&H finishes the 2011-12 season with a 12-13 record, its most wins since the 2006-07 season, when the team won 14 games.
