Bridgewater Men's Basketball Survives Emory & Henry Rally, 71-62, Saturday Afternoon

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Bridgewater College Men's Basketball Team (4-2, 1-1 ODAC) held off a late-game rally by Emory & Henry College (0-5, 0-2 ODAC) to win 71-62 Saturday afternoon at Nininger Hall in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action.

The Eagles got out to a 7-0 lead in the first 1:46 of the game and led 9-3 three minutes into the contest thanks to seven points by Travis Stapleton. Bridgewater would push its lead to 13 (21-8) at the 11:50 mark, but Emory & Henry went on a 12-3 run to close the gap to 24-20 with 7:23 remaining before the break. BC finished the half with an 11-5 scoring spurt for the 35-25 halftime advantage.

In the second half, Bridgewater slowly built its lead to its largest margin (22 with 13:30 remaining). The two squads would trade baskets back and forth for the next three minutes setting up the Eagles with a 59-37 lead with 10:47 on the clock. Emory & Henry put up a storm of offense for the next 7:33 as it went on a 17-2 run to cut the lead to 61-54.

BC pushed the lead back to double digits, but E&H responded to cut it back to seven on two separate occasions down the stretch, before running out of time. The Eagles were six-for-eight from the free throw line in the final two minutes to seal the win, 71-62.

For the game, Bridgewater shot 49.1 percent (26-for-53) for the game compared to just 21-for-58 (36.2 percent) for Emory & Henry. Rebounding, free throw percentage, assists, turnovers and steals were all close between the two teams.

Ed Reddick had 19 points and nine rebounds to lead the Eagles while Ronnie Thomas added 18 points and seven boards. Stapleton finished the contest with 14 ponts.

Emory & Henry was paced by freshman guard Myles Turner (Richmond, Va.) as he posted 18 points and pulled down six rebounds. Senior forward Armando Murrell (Brooklyn, N.Y.) posted 14 points and six rebounds off the bench while junior Jorel Terrell (Port Saint Lucie, Fla.) and junior forward Tyler Mullins (Hazard, Ky.) registered eight and seven points, repectively.

The Wasps will return home to Bob Johnson Court on Wednesday night when they host the Tigers of Hiwassee College. Tipoff is set for 8:00 p.m., and will be the nightcap of a doubleheader with the E&H women's team.
