Emory & Henry Men's Basketball Takes Down Hiwassee, 66-49, For First Win Of The Year Wednesday

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Men's Basketball Team (1-5) picked up its first win of the season Wednesday night as it defeated Hiwassee College (3-11) by a 66-49 score at Bob Johnson Court.

Hiwassee got out to a 5-0 lead at the 16:34 mark of the first half. E&H then went on a 13-3 run over the next 4:46 for a 13-8 advantage. Up 19-12, the Wasps scored six-straight points in the paint for their largest lead of the first half (25-12). Emory & Henry would take a 29-20 margin into the break.

After the intermission, the Tigers trimmed the deficit to 32-27, but the Wasps responded to push their lead back to double digits. With the score 48-41 with 8:28 remaining, Emory & Henry put together a 13-3 scoring spurt to go up by 17 (61-44). E&H led by as much as 19 (65-46) late in the contest, going on for the 66-49 victory.

Junior guard Stephen Brown (Charleston, S.C.) led the way with 17 points as he connected on five three-point baskets in the game. Junior forward Jorel Terrell (Port Saint Lucie, Fla.) had 11 points for the Wasps while senior center Armando Murrell (Brooklyn, N.Y.) pitched in nine points and nine rebounds.

As a team, E&H shot 48.1 percent (25-for-52) from the floor and tallied 34 points in the paint. The Wasps' outrebounded the Tigers, 45-28, while the bench outscored their counterparts, 36-12.

Hiwassee was led by Justin Browner with 17 points while Jeff Golden added 12 points and six boards. The Tigers shot just 35.3 percent (18-for-51) on the night.

Emory & Henry will take off for three weeks for exams and the Christmas Holiday before hosting Berry College on Friday, December 28 at 5:00 p.m.
