Mary Washington Men’s Basketball Snaps Emory & Henry’s Win Streak, 85-61, Wednesday

LEXINGTON, Va. – The University of Mary Washington Men's Basketball Team (5-6) overcame a nine-point first-half deficit and went on to defeat Emory & Henry College (2-6) by a 85-61 score Wednesday afternoon in the Washington and Lee Classic. The loss snaps a two-game winning streak by the Wasps.

Emory & Henry got out to a 7-2 lead in the first 1:41 of the contest thanks to five points from freshman guard Myles Turner (Richmond, Va.). E&H would lead by as much as nine (18-9 with 13:14 remaining) before UMW took control. Down 26-19 at the 6:40 mark, the Eagles went on a 16-6 run to take a 35-32 advantage into the half.

After the break, UMW hit six of its first seven field goals to start the second half as it stretched its run to 31-8 to take a 50-34 lead with 16:44 on the clock. Mary Washington would continue to build its lead slowly over the second half as it cruised to the 85-61 victory.

The Eagles were paced by Taylor Johnson with 19 points and six rebounds as hit a game-high three treys in the contest. Lamont Fields had 15 points and seven boards while Bradley Reister and Antonio Ortega chipped in nine points apiece.

For the game, Mary Washington shot 45.7 percent (32-for-70) from the floor and connected on nine-of-27 attempts from beyond the arc. The Eagles won the battle of points in the paint, 42-28, and held a 31-6 advantage in points off turnovers.

Emory & Henry was led by junior forward Charles Smith (Fayetteville, N.C.) with 14 points and five rebounds while senior forward Armando Murrell (Brooklyn, N.Y.) added 12 points and three boards before fouling out. Turner ended the night with 10 points and added three assists while junior forward Jorel Terrell (Port Saint Lucie, Fla.) recorded nine points.

The Wasps shot just 39.2 percent (20-for-51) for the game and suffered from 22 turnovers.

Emory & Henry will face Kenyon College tomorrow afternoon in the final day of the Washington and Lee Classic. Tipoff between the Wasps and the Lords is set for 2:00 p.m.
