Kenyon Men’s Basketball Nips Emory & Henry, 68-66, In Washington and Lee Classic Thursday

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Kenyon College Men's Basketball Team (7-6) hit the game-winning layup with 5.3 seconds remaining on the clock as it squeaked out a 68-66 victory over Emory & Henry College (2-7) Thursday afternoon at the Washington and Lee Classic at the Warner Center. Neither team led by more than seven points in the game which featured 13 ties and 11 lead changes.

The two squads battled to a 6-6 tie in the first 4:48 of the contest before Emory & Henry went on a 7-2 run to open up a 13-8 lead with 11:52 on the clock. Kenyon responded with an 11-4 run of its own to knot the score at 17.

Down by one (23-22 with 6:43 remaining), the Wasps reeled off eight straight points including back-to-back three pointers by freshman guard Myles Turner (Richmond, Va.) and junior forward Tyler Mullins (Hazard, Ky.) for a 30-23 advantage, the largest lead of the game. The Lords would trim the margin to 38-36 at the half.

After the break, the score would remain close the whole way with nine ties and five lead changes in the second half alone. Emory & Henry shot 10-for-21 (47.6 percent) for the half compared to 34.4 percent (11-for-32) for Kenyon, but the Wasps fell victim to poor free throw shooting and turnovers.

Kenyon was led by Julian Pavlin with 21 points, three assists and two rebounds. Brian Lebowitz scored 17 of his 19 points after the break, and chipped in five boards. Cooper Handelsman had 11 points and three rebounds as well for the Lords.

Senior forward Armando Murrell (Brooklyn, N.Y.) paced Emory & Henry offensively with 14 points and six rebounds while Turner finished the day with 13 points, eight boards and a game-high four assists. Mullins had 12 points and eight rebounds as well while junior forward Charles Smith (Fayetteville, N.C.) registered seven points and seven rebounds.

Emory & Henry will return home on Saturday to face Eastern Mennonite University in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action at 2:00 p.m.
