Emory & Henry Men’s Basketball Defeats Shenandoah, 66-56, Saturday For First ODAC Win

WINCHESTER, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Men's Basketball Team (3-9, 1-4 ODAC) picked up its first Old Dominion Athletic Conference win of the year Saturday afternoon as it defeated Shenandoah University (3-12, 0-6 ODAC) by a 66-56 margin at Shingleton Gymnasium.

The Wasps got out to a 10-5 lead at the 15:23 mark of the first half. Shenandoah then went on a 16-6 run over the next 7:36 for a 21-16 advantage. E&H would go into the break only down by one point, 26-25, thanks to a pair of layups by junior forward Charles Smith (Fayetteville, N.C.).

After the intermission, the Hornets extended their lead with a 11-4 run over the first 4:38 of the period for a 37-29 lead. Emory & Henry then scored the next 15 points to go up, 44-37, with 10:08 on the clock.

Shenandoah cut the lead to three (47-44 with 6:49 remaining) but would get no closer as E&H pushed the margin to double digits with 79 seconds to go. A late run by the Hornets would cut the deficit to just five (61-56) but the Wasps made five of their last six free throws to go on to the 66-56 victory.

Emory & Henry was paced by junior forward Tyler Mullins (Hazard, Ky.) with 12 points and six rebounds while senior forward Armando Murrell (Brooklyn, N.Y.) had 11 points of his own.  Junior forward Jorel Terrell (Port Saint Lucie, Fla.) and Smith each finished the game with 10 points with Terrell adding six rebounds. Junior guard Brett Pearman (Chesapeake, Va.) dished-out a game high six assists as well in the contest.

The Wasps shot 48.1 percent (25-for-52) for the game and won the battle of the boards, 45-26. E&H outscored SU, 38-20, in the paint and held a 13-2 margin on second-chance points.

Shenandoah was led by Sharif Amulla's 12 points and Jared Carithers chipped in 11 points and four assists. Eli McEathron and Jimi Starks each had eight points off the bench for the Hornets.

Emory & Henry will host Washington and Lee University on Monday evening at 7:00 p.m. at Bob Johnson Court.
